General Car Chat / Son has just upset me??
« on: 20 April 2012, 16:26:23 »
My son called me today, he lives in New Zealand so we do not see him often, he has just bought himself a merc 500 coupe with a 5ltr v8 in it. fuel is a bit cheaper over there  so he can enjoy it. Poor old dad has a 4 pot omega. (had a few v8's in my younger days).
He seems to be having a good life, he lives on his yacht moored in a marina and is able to walk to work, so good for him.

General Car Chat / My Dear, Dear, Omega
« on: 29 December 2011, 12:11:43 »
I have grown to like the omega over the past three years, it rides well, now pulls the caravan fairly well and is not bad on fuel for a big lump, BUT it has been an expensive experience, Apart from service and tyres wich are wear and tear (including an exhaust) it has had, mass air flow sensor, lambda sensor, camshaft sensor, new cam belt, new brake discs and pads new rear springs and shocks, I had spring assistors fitted as well to help with towing, new battery and problems with the power sounder. It is now missing on one cyclinder on start up, this clears after a while but I wonder if the coil pack is getting ready to die. It goes in for service next wednesday so fingers crossed it may only be a plug.
But i still do like the car, it has just turned 84K, which is not a lot on a 03 car, as I am an old git I do not want to spend more money on another car at present, and I do believe in better the devil you know.(or think you do)

General Car Chat / Tractor Drivers
« on: 11 November 2011, 16:11:04 »
I am refering to the agricultural Type of tractor!!! Had to stand the old girl on her front bumper today when a tractor with a 40ft trailer behind it decided not to stop when it joined the main a17, but came straight out of the side road onto the main road in front of me, when I looked over at him he just stuck his fingers up at me as was gone.
as I understand it these drivers do not have any special training or licence because it is an agricultural vehicle despite it being as big as an artic who's driver would have to have had a special test, we do suffer from these a bit in this part of the country but this one was one of the closest encounters I have had, had the road been wet I would have gone under the trailer I am sure.
Good job the old girl is in good order as she stopped straight and true in good time.

General Car Chat / Spring assisters
« on: 07 September 2011, 19:35:47 »
Just used the car to bring home the caravan, this is the first time I have used it since having the spring assisters fitted. The improvement was terific , the caravan was just slightly nose down but plenty of clearance between the jockey wheel and the road, it used to catch before on a bumpy road.
So after new springs and shocks on the rear and now the assisters all is well and the outfit is much better to drive. Pity its near the end of summer but never mind, down to Norfolk in three weeks and see how the weather goes after that.
Any one who is thinking of fitting them for towing should do it, it is worth the small cost.

General Car Chat / Alarm problems
« on: 30 June 2011, 19:05:39 »
It is not my week with this car, after resolving the water leak problems with the help of this site, the car alarm keeps going off of its own accord. This is not the horn alarm but the siren that should only operate when the battery is tampered with according to the handbook.
I am now sitting indoors waiting for it to go off the next time, has anyone experienced this problem and what is the cure, I am desperate as the neighbours are getting a bit restless, it has only started to do this from yesterday.

General Car Chat / Spring Assistors
« on: 22 June 2011, 17:53:45 »
I tow a caravan with my 2.2, when loaded the rear drops very low causing the jockey wheel on the caravan to catch the road on an uneven surface.
I have had new springs fitted and new shocks, I have checked the nose weight of the loaded van and it is just under the recomended figure of 75kgs.
My next thought was to fit spring assistors, has anyone any experiance of having done this, I was concerned about the ride after fitting

« on: 18 October 2010, 19:09:28 »
My 03 2.2 went in for test today, failed on a broken spring on the nearside rear, showed up two tyres nearing replacement also, by the time its had the springs done the tyres and mot costs it looks like another £300 gone, still the tyres are wear & tear so can,t complain about that. Why is there always something, and if it go's into the garage its always hundreds, still like it though. :

General Car Chat / fed up.
« on: 22 January 2010, 17:26:41 »
A week last thursday the emissions light came on and the car started to run rough, as it was due for service I took it in on Mondayfor service and to sort out the problem.
Monday evening and the car will still not run smoothly having changed various sensors and the mechanics tearing thier hair out, tuesday and different set of sensors just to make sure, no result. Wednesday the car goes to main dealer for checks, they suspect the cat, Thursday back with my garage order new cat, friday part arrives and is fitted, just heard back no joy.
The car is now booked into another VX dealer in Stamford on tuesday to see if they can sort out the fault, I have no complaint with my garage as they have said any part that does not work they will take off again, and he is trying to keep the cost down and is being reasonable.
I feel that my legs have been chopped off as we live in the country, it is causing us a bit of grief at present, I expect the bill to be horrible when it is all sorted.

General Car Chat / Exhaust Drone
« on: 31 December 2009, 17:14:46 »
I have recently had a new exhaust fitted and it seems to have a droning noise at about 45mph in top, is this normal, I was wondering if the exhaust was fouling something, although it goes away as your speed increases. can anyone enlighten me.

General Car Chat / 2003 2.2 petrol service info.
« on: 12 December 2009, 14:20:13 »
Can anyone help please, I have recently bought a 2.2 omega but it does not have a service book with it, I have been told that it has had the cam belt changed but I would like to know what to look for, also the service intervals for this vehicle how often are they.
First saloon I have had for many years seems great after years of 4x4's, fuel economy is great.

Many thanks
