Oh Bugger !
« on: 22 March 2007, 20:10:15 »

The car has decided it wants 15 attempts before it will start ! Runs fine then, although it did cut out again after 30 yards tonight, then drove 20 faultless miles. Appears to start okay when warm.

Too dark to try the paperclip test now, but pretty sure it's the crank sensor. Just hope it starts in the morning, as I won't be able to get to the motor factors to buy a new one !!!! :-[

Sorry to day Rob, I think you're right, be careful at junctions if you drive it as it may cut out just when you don't want it too. :(

You can tell those who have been badly let down by a crank sensor - they carry a spare in the boot now ;)

If you are getting a 19 code on a v6, do not use the car. It WILL let you down.

Cheers all.

If weather's okay, I might just go to work on the bike instead !!!! :-/

Is it easy enough to get to the sensor connector, without removing the wipers and scuttle panel ? Need to check if the square or round type before I buy !

hope the new one is more reliable than the one we replaced on my wife's old Corsa............went though one every 3 months !!!! :-[

... route the cable properly (away from the downpipe and preferably the oil cooler pipes too) and it should be fine ...

I had the same kind of problems with mine, the conking out became more regular ... crank sensor is about £40-45 on trade club ... although I did end up getting a local garage to fit it as I couldn't wait until the weekend to get it fitted (my garage is about 4 miles away and I didn't trust the car to make it!!), cost me another £40-ish for that ... but it was fine afterwards  :)

Currently we don't have a decent piccy of the connector end and location, so feel free to take one whilst you have it apart ;)

... well these aren't much cop, but might help in identifying where to look, they were taken when the engine was stripped down for the cam cover change.

... crank sensor plug - fits into the plastic bracket that hooks over the rear engine lifting bracket ... (bracket is in the top right of the pic). The plastic bracket also normally has the injector loom plug slotted into it as well ...

... and the plug on the loom that it connects to - this is on a 2000 model year 3.0 V6 - it's the one with the orange bit in the middle ...

be aware that there are different types specified for the 2.5's, one with a square plug, the other with rounded corners - and apparently not even the engine number helps  in identifying which one is needed, you need to take pics of the original or take it with you ...
