Nav disc popped out
« on: 22 December 2012, 23:43:59 »

Not using Nav. Radio only, driving along. Disc pops out over a speed bump.

Whatzatden? Surely it's not reading the disc when not in use?

It went back in on it's own.  ???

Possibly the start of the laser playing up ??? Mine spits the disc out with monotonous regularity, then sucks it back in, until the radio system has got really warm ... about 30-40 minutes usually before it settles down.

I think the reason is that when I got the car it had a pirate, copied disc in .. replaced with a genuine but my guess is the damage is done.

I keep thinking about buying a replacement laser unit of the bay .. a german store has them ... but I'm not sure my electronic skills are good enough to do the job.

Perhaps someone who "does" electronics will be attending Guffers meet with nothing else to do ... if so I'll buy one and pay beer money for the job to be done ... :)

Mind you .. I hope to change the radiator at the same meet .... if I can make it once the date is fixed :)

Yes the jobs are building up aren't they.

The other car is the same as yours. Good while to warm up.

Is it worth removing the disc if not using the Nav I wonder...? Inconvenient but...

Yeah, the tell-tale signs of the laser dying. Might be worth cleaning the disk if its got fingerprints/marks on it.

Is it worth removing the disc when not in use? Would that save the laser a bit?

Not really - when powered up, it will spin the disc and sense the disc is there but won`t be reading it all the time - It may periodically check for the disc, but not really enough to cause any wear.

Dunno, on these, they do seem to go to the disk quite a lot, even when not in use.  Hence, it can pop out 30mins or so after starting. But more normal to do so within first 5mins or so.

Device is always receiving updated positioning from the antenna so will be constantly updating the map position regardless of user input / not using NAV functionality.

What if you put a Music CD in there for a week, I know its not the same as a Nav Disk but will give an idea with whats going on with temperature, cold to warm up etc.

Failing that check Nav Disc for Curry Doggy Bag stains.   ;)
