Depends what you want it for: if it's just as a boost to a failing or undercharged battery, then the pocket sized things work OK even on a 3.0l. They also tend to stay charged for long periods. But if you intend using it on something that's stood for a while, or will turn over a lot then you need something with a traditional battery inside and will need to charge it frequently.

If its because your battery regularly goes flat, you need to solve that issue. End of.

A battery booster is not going to help if your battery keeps going flat.  Dont waste your money on one.  Boosters have their uses, but they are not a magic cure for a car with high discharge or that doesn't get used.

So, if you battery goes flat within a week or 2, you need to find the drain.  If it does flat through lack of use, you need to find a way to keep it charged, be that a charger, or a second battery that you swap over every week.

I've said it a million times, but you also need to remember that if you let a car battery deep discharge, its oppsed. End of.  If you repeatedly let a car battery partially discharge, its oppsed. End of.

Sadly I cant win with batterys.  I have mobilty issues and dont use the car like I used.  I went for an eye test on the 14th Jan and the car hasnt been used since.  (tried earlier this month but Zero)

Better weather it will get more use, but October through till now then not much at all.  Plus lifting the bonnet and disconecting then reverseing it to reconnet is not an option either.

Oh and when people like the AA start the usual lecture all I can say is "Boris told me to stay indoors"

Out of interest, what are the likely culprits for battery draining.?

Alarm, radio, anything plugged in...

The best way to keep an Omega is to disconnect the battery negative. Just make sure that the key opens the doors first.  :y

maybe a solar charger would help .... there are some pretty cheap panels about.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/streetwize-12v-6w-solar-trickle-battery-charge/ ... no idea how good or bad it'd be, but surely better than nothing.

Pity I cant put a switch in series with each fuse.  Get out of the car and switch all the circuits off, get in and switch them all back on.

You could fit a master switch, although this will have exactly the same effect as disconnecting the battery and will still mean using the key to physically lock/unlock the car...

Starter ::) for ten...

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/battery-maintenance/jump-starters/noco-gb50-1500-amp-ultrasafe-lithium-jump-starter-216406.html

Smaller/cheaper versions available.

Whilst it doesn't help the OP. Just say I've got one of those Noco GP50 and actually supprised myself how well they work, they will easily start around 6 cars in a row, don't expect them to turn an engine over for 10 mins as they won't, but will happily start an known good car even with the battery totally shagged or missing.

The Noco's are American made and the cheaper Chinese Tat ones aren't a patch on them.

There's a reason why many of the bigger pick ups have two batteries. There's a few Youtubers who swear by the Noco boosters. Anything that can cold start three diesel V8s in a row has to be worth a look ;)

Just search for a 12 volt portable car jump starter.
I have a Halfords one from donkeys years ago.
Cost me 80 quid iirc.
20Ah battery (since upgraded with a few alarm system batteries taped together)
light
300 watt invertor
Compressor for the tyres.
Charge it up from a fag lighter or mains.

Replaced the compressor about 5 years ago.
Just charge it up and chuck it in the boot of the car.
Saved mine and others arses many a time

My ML has 2 batteries  ... 1 under the driver's seat & another motorbike type battery in the boot area. I've yet to get 2 answers the same as to what the little battery is for.

Seems to be pretty much the current industry standard on medium and heavy duty trucks. Even Transhits have two full batteries here.  ;)

but that alone or something else too? If I sit with the ignition at auxiliary with 'thing's on eg wipers, heated seats, radio, heater fan  ... are they supplied by the big starter battery under my seat or the baby battery in the back? I wouldn't imagine the baby battery would last very long.  :-\ :-\

All I remember on the W251, the Aux battery solely used for the S/S system.  Something in the back of my head is saying it will also allow the transmission to move from Park to Neutral in event of a main battery failure..... although that could be S-Class only.  :-\

Useful seems to be against Mercedes principles; I've struggled with lots of transmissions that did all sorts of curious design decisions. The FWD autos shift back into neutral after a few seconds if the engine isn't running. I saw a number of E-class that wouldn't shift out of Park if the engine wasn't turning, which makes moving a non-runner interesting. They stopped using manual park releases nearly 20 years ago, and you can't even crawl underneath and disconnect the mechanical selector because they're all electronic.

Mine still has a mechanical connection between the lever and the shift switch. It also has a cable interlock to stop the lever leaving park if the key is removed and the key from being removed if it isn't in park. That's obviously on top of the electrical interlock that won't release the lever if the brake pedal isn't pressed. This only works with power.

So if you don't have the key, and/or the battery is flat doing anything without a fork lift starts to look alot like work ::)

I wish I'd taken more notice now, but at Mercedes, they'd just unloaded a dead car with a remote controlled vehicle lift. The driver said it was just about the only way to retrieve dead cars from multi-storey car parks where they can't get the recovery vehicle to the stranded vehicle.

Judicious use of wheel dollies and a winch from some of Nick Ws recollections ;)

Exactly the same as my astra.
But I think there's a release tab under the selector cover.

I wish I'd taken more notice now, but at Mercedes, they'd just unloaded a dead car with a remote controlled vehicle lift. The driver said it was just about the only way to retrieve dead cars from multi-storey car parks where they can't get the recovery vehicle to the stranded vehicle.

It was something like this

If only ;D

I forgot, for good measure, Mercedes saw fit to bond the selector with the key, ignition barrel and engine ecu. Which is nice. Until one of them breaks ::)

only after several phone calls to convince the owner that their breakdown cover doesn't pay the £100 for the use of a pair of skates. Which most of our trucks didn't carry. Skates are considered specialist equipment, as is winching an immobile car.

There are two common types of skates: four independently steerable wheels, or two fixed and two steerable. The first become utterly unpredictable as soon as you apply some pull, and the second break at that point. If you do get skates as far as the end of the bed, it will swipe the wheels off the skate. I hate the bloody things.

I still like the old-school use of a plastic wheeltrim under each locked wheel :y

Always park your car with the front wheels straight. This reduces the load on the steering lock(do try not to apply it), and if for some reason the key doesn't work will make winching the car a lot more feasible. If they are turned, you'll be paying another £100 for a second pair of skates. Extensive swearing is included in the price....

Perhaps, and I wonder how it would cope if the car was the other way around...  :-\

I've nothing against complicated if it works better. Skates are meant to move immobile vehicles small distances in smooth floors, they're not good at loading them onto ramps or trucks.

A couple of wheeltrims works better for that, and saves you having to buy £40 worth of castors every couple of times you use skates.

Getting cars out of car parks, garages etc  is always interesting. If you're doing that because of lost keys, then a locksmith is less work, less chance of damaging the car, usually quicker and cheaper. And it actually solves the problem rather than the symptom.

NOCO Boost XL GB50 1500 Amp 12-Volt UltraSafe Portable Lithium Jump Starter

Found them on Amazon & Halfords for £145

Decided to go for it when credit card resets (gives me nearly 60 days credit)  deccided on the hard wire kit as well.

Whilst monitoring it went out of stock at Amazon, then became available for £122.51 and went back out of stock.

So who bought them all? :D :D :D

Maybe the stock is a bit north of Suez. On the Great Bitter Lake, pending completion of the inspection of the Ever Given.

Used the booster today (car been stood 28 days - flat battery) last time car was used it had been stood 21 days and started fine.

Hooked up the booster, after getting the hazzards turned off the car started instantly.

Got to admit these NOCO jump starters are very inpressive.

Today was the 2nd attempt to start the car with a flat battery (With the NOCO), 1st try a few months ago I didnt realise I had to press the 2nd button to boost a fullt flat battery.

Today I did the right thing and instant enginge start on turning the key. :y :y
