Changing the exhuast back box
« on: 10 February 2010, 05:25:04 »

Got my new back box today from Germany - £46 inclusive with a two year warranty. Build quality is brilliant. All that can be said for this country after the many quotes I got is there are a load of robbin' gits around!
Thing is now to get it put on. ;D
Question - What would be the best way to seperate the two input pipes from the old ones without deforming the pipes?
I am tempted to use a cutting/grinding disk in an angle grinder to cut a few slots along the joint length then prise it apart. Obviously I would do the job 'wet' to keep the sparks down.
I suppose re-assembly is also aided by a dollop of Holts 'FireGum'?
Yes, the car will be very safely supported on high blocks too. :D

Well done with the bargain back box, but as an ex-exhaust fitter i would recommend changing the middle section as well, if any part of the system is strengthened or renewed it will put a strain on the weak parts, the system is only as good as the weakest link if you like, and could leak in time.

My system needs to be changed before the MOT as the catalytic converter pipe joint is leaking and the rest of the system is corroded, the previous owner/s must have parked it on grass - I have no facilities for doing exhausts any more and  Kwikfit  quoted me £450 including cat  :o

Hope to shop around to find the three sections at half that price and ask my garage to fit it.

Thanx for the advice but the centre sections and fronts are in great nick and without any real corrosion. Obviously the rotten back box was not changed when they were - possibly due to an accident? Previous owner obviously a tight assed git given the other crap I have had to re-do with genuine bits.
My idea about splitting the pipe joints any good?

I have always found it easier to work/seperate the exhaust when it is hot. Obviously this has issues with burning yourself so be very careful.

Maybe over the next day or two spray liberally with penetrating oil each day, and then work on a hot exhaust. But make sure you are wearing gloves and goggles and have no exposed skin.

HTH

Just out of interest, is this who you bought your exhaust from ? as I have been thinking about one. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Exhaust-Rear-Pipes-Back-Box-Vauxhall-Omega-B-3-0-MV6-Ne_W0QQitemZ200436334958QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item2eaaefc16e

yes, used to do that when i was a fitter back in the 70's when cars were much simpler, but was still very risky unless you had the car up on a ramp and a large fire extinguisher handy  -  luckily i never had any little accidents.  ::)

Job done!
Working from cold all I did in the end was to cut a few splits into the old box pipe sleeve with an angle grinder and cutting disc and then seperated them with an old screwdriver. I just cut the old pipe clamps off cos I had new ones. The old box slipped straight off with a small wiggle. Quick clean up with a wire brush and a cloth, a smear of Holts FireGum paste and everthing slipped together very nicely. Took me just over an hour all told.
Sound is now a low even throb that says 'there is power here'.
Under 50 quid total and with a 2 year warranty!
Beat that one then.
Well happy.

'Original' one fitted for what 30 to 45? No chance it was an original equipment one at those prices. It was probably an 'Original' (cloned aftermarket) equipment type used by the tyre and exhaust 'specialists'. Found the docs from the old owner and the one that I changed cos it had clapped out in 14 months according to the receipt was a 32 quid 'special' fitted by one of the so called 'tyre and exhaust specialist places. It was a lightweight badly manufactured one with crap welding on the supports.
A genuine VX one is astronomical in cost even with discounts so I very seriously doubt whether one can be had that VX fit for the price you say. I tried the ones around here first and even the exhaust centres were all over the ton fitted.
The one I have now is very heavy, built to last and has a 2 year warranty. Typical of German engineering and fitted to Opel as standard. Even the box it came in was way better then the plastic bag , if any packing at all that the uk ones come with. Look here for it;

The whole job for 50 notes, and a 2 year warranty, I know I have had the best deal possible and this one sounds like it should too, just like the car was new again. A deep low throb and not the tinny bark of the others cheapos I have heard.
I am happy, be happy for me.

Hello guys,

After two months of the very last issue, now I'm having troubles with my exhaust. The flexi pipe is broken at the front between the two catalytic converters. Now trying to order a spare flexi pipe from this website
http://exhaustpartsuk.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34&products_id=58
but I'm not sure of the exact size of my pipe. When I've temporary fixed it, I've covered the pipe with a piece of metal which avoids me now to measure the exact size.
I think it supposed to be 50mm. Are you aware of any website or drawing where I could get the exact size? Mine is a 2001 2.2 petrol automatic....

Thank you for your help in advance!

A bit off topic but...
I have just fixed my exhaust joint, it was leaking.
The dealer had it three times, all three times it still leaked. Last week took it to a garage, they said take it apart refit £45 labour plus parts if any. Then they said it may cost you the price of a new centre section as well.
Well I booked it in for them to do, then cancelled it the day after. Cost me all of £2.00 for two clamps and and an old bit of tin to cover the joint.
And it was a better looking bodge than the dealer made. All now quiet again and holding after 5 days.
