Problems!!!
« on: 14 February 2009, 10:14:02 »

Hi all

Ive just put 5 litres of oil in my car, as the dipstick was showing only 1 bar so was pretty low. Put the oil in and took it onto the A1, where i put my foot down. Thick smoke has started coming out of the exhuast and the car is pulling when driving at high revs, like its spluttering. Does anyone have any ideas? The car was working perfectly until i did this!! I noticed alot of mayo under the cap and along the pipe but no oil in the water bottle. Please help, i want to go out!

Thanks

You put 5l in on top of what was already in there :o

Please say this is not the case...

The car only takes 5.75 litres from empty so you've probably put to much in. Stop the car and leave it for an hour then check the dipstick. You will have to take some oil out.

Before using it again, do a full oil and filter change.  You have far too much oil in there.

Hopefully you have not damaged seals or mechanical components.

Be aware when you drop the oil (from the sump plug), you need a large container, as I reckon you'll have 9l coming out...

Is there a reason for why its non responsive at high revs? What could the oil have done. I thought it was supposed to make it better  :(

Having too much oil can be as bad as having too little oil. When checking the oil level next time, take your time, make sure the car is on level ground and add a bit at a time and check the level weekly that way it shouldn't get so low.

There's a plug in the bottom of the sump. you need to remove it but get a new O ring before you take it out, and don't over tighten it when you put it back.

Well yeh i kinda guess that. I was looking for a helpful answer tbh. Like why having too much oil makes the car non responsive.

As there is too much oil in, as the piston comes down, its hitting the oil (which it cant compress), and oil is forced passed the piston seals, hence the exhaust smoke.

At higher revs, it can't force the oil out quick enough - you're trying to rip the piston off the conrod.  Worse case - breaked engine. Best case - expensive repair.

I cannot stress enough - DO NOT USE THE CAR until you have the correct oil level.

Is this a wind up?
No, you will need to drain by the drain plug in in sump.

Or the set-up that sucks the oil from the dipstick tube  :y
