Title: Power Steering Problems.
Post by: EddieX on 12 September 2006, 20:18:48
In the morning, after a cool night, the power steering doesn't want to help me turn right.
It's not too serious: it feels like it could be a sticky valve because once the steering wheel has been moved a few degrees right of straight ahead, the power assist returns. Do that twice and it's OK for the rest of the day.

I'm considering changing the fluid but not sure how to go about it.
Anybody like to do a 'How To' on this?

Thanks,  Eddie.

No takers yet then!

I believe you can 'purge' the system by turning the wheel to the left a half turn and then right a half turn then all the way left and hold it for 10 seconds, then all the way right for the same.
(Probably best done on slippery surface).

I'm not sure if the method above is correct, but you get the point.

I've heard Marks_DTM talk about undoing a union down near rack, as its a lowish point in the system...

For the slippery surface, drive the front wheels of the car onto a glossy magazine (an old not the wife's curent hello et al! ;D).  This will lower the resistance between the ground and tyre, making the bleeding procedure much easier (and more importantly, less strain on the system and tyres).

I used this to great effect when I fitted PAS to one of my transit vans.

Thanks all. I'll let you know how I get on, when I find the time to do it.
