Omega General Help / Re: Cruise control on a 1998 S reg CD Estate
« on: 04 December 2006, 23:40:51 »
Hi Amorok,
I fitted cruise to my 1999 2lt auto and it was very easy to do.
As previously mentioned, the cruise unit fits on the three studs just below the water expansion bottle. There should be a multi plug with a blanking insert clipped to your drivers side strut top. unclip this, remove the blanking insert and plug this into the cruise unit.
The control cable runs from the cruise unit  up to the same point that your accelerator cable is fitted too. If you remove the accelerator cable, the cruise cable goes on first and is secured in place by a small circlip. you'll also see where the outer fits against the bracket where the accelerator cable outer is held.
Moving inside the car, remove the steering column cowling by undoing the screws from underneath. remember to remove the adjustable steering column lever by unscrewing it. This will then give you access to the indicator switch. derpress the two lugs either side and slide the original switch out before unplugging the multi plug. If you have a fish about behind the switch gear, you should find the extra multi plug that plugs into the flying lead on your cruise/indicator stalk. Plug this in and the original plug too and refit the switch.
The final bit is to check if the brake light switch has two or four pins for the wiring. You need 4 for the cruise so if it's only got two, change it by depressing the lugs either side of the brakelight switch and pulling it clear. This can be a bit fiddly to do but it does come out!
That's it  :)  Take the car for a run, and all going well, your cruise should work fine.
It should only take about 30 mins all in and well worth it  ;)

Cheers Jim

Omega General Help / Re: Automatic Gear Selector not lighting up!!!
« on: 24 October 2006, 09:35:28 »
Hi Jim, did Kev have any joy with your selector lights? I've noticed with mine that if I put the light switch on quickly, the selector goes out, turn it slowly and it stays in!!! Still goes out after you select a different gear tho....  ::)

I had a play with mine in the dark tonight (maybe should rephrase that  ;D) Anyway, I noticed that if I selected any gear before putting the lights on, the led indicator stayed lit. As soon as I changed into another position on the selector or tried to dim the dash lights, the led goes out and stays out. Weirder by the minute  ::)

Jim, I'll live with mine until Kev or someone else had fathomed out the problem, I hate trying to find electrical faults  ;)

Sounds2k, I know my number plate lights are working as the car was just mot'd and had the fault then. I've also checked every fuse was the right size, present and correct. I've always done this when I get a new car, goes back to finding a bolt in place of a glass fuse many years ago  :o

Hi Hillper,
when we turn on the lights the led indicator goes out completely.

Cheers, (the other) Jim  :)

Yep and I'm eagerly waiting to hear what the problem is too  ;D  Sounds like we're not alone Jim as someone else has posted the same fault on another thread!

Cheers Jim.

Omega General Help / Re: Stalling
« on: 22 December 2006, 02:10:34 »
Hi Craig, mine is a november '99 so also a 2ltr facelift and the paperclip test works fine, Ignition on but car not running. The Inlet manifold is the big silver lump that's part of where you have arrowed  ::) and bolts onto the cylinder head. It houses the injectors as well as the air intake bits.

Hi Craig, were all the breathers ect cleaned after the hg failure? Also, was the inlet manifold renewed if it was taken off for hg replacement? I tried to reuse mine when I fitted the replacement engine and it gave me similar symptoms to yours. I had already cleaned the Idle control valve and checked all the vacumm hoses before I solved the problem by replacing the inlet manifold gasket. It must have been drawing air and has been fine since.

Cheers Jim  :)

Omega General Help / Re: Starting/running problems - Odd Code
« on: 17 December 2006, 11:30:54 »
Hi Skint,
when I check fault codes, I have to do it with the ignition on but without the engine running. mine will not flash codes with the engine running either (2ltr GLS '99 facelift.)

Omega General Help / Re: Steering Gone A Bit Crazy...
« on: 06 December 2006, 22:09:07 »
I seem to recall there being a rubber joint part way down the steering column in the engine bay. I know these were used on Fords and used to wear, not sure about the Omega though. Sounds like it's related to the steering column or rack to me and could be pretty dangerous if it fails completely. I'd advise not driving the car until you find and fix the cause  :o

That's even lower than mine sits, I was thinking along the line of the thermostat being the problem too. you can get a genuine one from Vauxhall or should be able to get a pattern one from Halfords or any decent motor factor, I would have thought.

I'd agree, classic worn wheel bearing symptoms  :(  When you have the car jacked up, check for play by grasping the wheel at both sides and rocking. On some cars, you can tighten the bearing a bit if it's just worked loose, not sure if this applies to the Omega though??

Does the estate have any vents at the back and if so, where are they?

Haven't really resolved it fully but resyncronising the servos helped and it's bearable now  ::) Driving with the front window down a bit definitly helps too but you get wet when it rains  :P

Cheers Jim
