Omega General Help / All Steamed up!!!
« on: 15 November 2006, 20:29:32 »
Am I alone in having real problems with my windscreen steaming up on the GLS estate? Today it was so bad in the rain that the car was verging on being dangerous to drive! There were only 2 of us in it, the climate control was set upwards to the 'screen only on full fan and irrespective of whether I had it hot or cold, the top half to 2/3rds of the window was steamed up constantly  >:(
So far, I've cleaned the vent hole in the air intake chamber, replaced the pollen filter (tried running without too) and did the servo reset with the buttons on the climate control panel. I don't have the aircon regassed so running on eco. The carpets are bone dry and there's no smell of damp in the car so it's not a leak.
Surely it shouldn't be this bad? Hell, my 1960's Imp clears the screen better!!

Any ideas and is anyone else having the same sort of problem?

Cheers Jim

Omega General Help / Steaming up
« on: 27 October 2006, 10:57:57 »
hi guys, I've notice in the last couple of days wet weather that my Omega windows steam up really bad. The other night it was tipping it down and even on the motorway with the blower on full towards the 'screen it was struggling to keep it clear! If i tried to put some air down to keep my feet warm, it just fogged up again. I've no air con at the mo so this was on the ECO setting. The carpets are all dry enough so I don't think theres any major dampness in the car.
Could it be a damp pollen filter or is this just a trait of the omega? (I know a mate with an Astra has the same problem!)

Omega General Help / suspected air leak, where should I look??
« on: 18 October 2006, 20:35:32 »
Hi guys,
I've still got my eml lit with the codes showing for a lambda and maf fault. I changed both of these today for second hand units to no avail so it looks like I've got an air leak somewhere, as has been previously suggested. As far as I can make out, all vacuum pipes & breathers are clear and in good condition.
Where's the most likely areas for air leaks on the 2ltr ecotech? The car drives fine with no misfires, just an uneven idle from time to time on petrol. I'd also say that it is maybe a bit thirstier than it should be but I'm not sure on that one as I've not had it long enough to do a proper fuel economy check. Initial findings are about 20mpg on LPG with very mixed motorway and town driving, although I'm not 100% about this inital check.
One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a lot of gurgeling from the canister under the battery, is this normal?
I'm thinking about changing the inlet & exhaust manifold gaskets next week, just to eliminate them and have a check of the egr valve, any other suggestions?

Omega General Help / Lambda interchangeability
« on: 17 October 2006, 10:45:31 »
Hi all, my eml is now only registering 2 codes, lambda and MAF sensor. Ive been looking at Gendan Automotive products and the lambda they list for the Omega 2ltr is also suitable for several other Vauxhalls. I'm not 100% convinced that the fault is with my lambda so the question is - will a lambda from another Vauxhall with the same multiplug work okay? I'm aware of the difference between Titania and zirconia, shame they can't be interchanged as I've got 2 universal ziconia ones in the garage  :(
I'd like to try a second hand lambda before splashing out on a new one. I'll change the MAF first as I've read that a fault here car flash up the lambda code and vice versa!

Omega General Help / Uneven Idle - lpg related??
« on: 04 October 2006, 19:34:16 »
The GLS is running fine, took it for a quick test drive tonight just to check the auto box etc. The only issue I'm having is with an uneven idle speed. It is fluctuating between 500 rpm and 900rpm ish once it is warmed up. Started from cold, the idle is steady but much higher for a spell before it drops and starts fluctuating. I switched over to lpg and the idle increases to 2000rpm but is steady. I suspect that the disconnected & broken LPG Lambda is causing this when on gas. Is the idle control valve my most likely suspect? I take it, that's the shiny cylindrical thing on the inlet manifold?  ;) I've got a spare so will try it tomorrow anyway, just wondered if there was any other likely culprit.
Incidently, the engine management light has remained lit since I replaced the engine. As the battery was disconnected for several months, will this be a new problem or still lit from the knackered engine issues?
Many thanks, Jim

Omega General Help / Yet another aircon question!
« on: 11 October 2006, 17:13:18 »
Hi all,
when the "mechanic" (cowboy) removed the engine from my GLS prior to me buying it, he had to disconnect the aircon pump and remove the cooling rad etc. He didn't tape up the pipe ends as I've seen mentioned on here and the system has probably been open to the elements for 6 months at least. I've reconnected everything and would like to get the aircon working again, will the long period of disconnection have done any damage? I'd rather check or change things before  I take it to be regassed as it would be a waste of money otherwise. What should I  or can I check before regassing?

Omega General Help / Cruise Control - stalk removal
« on: 03 October 2006, 17:08:54 »
Hi Guys,
The Omega that donated it's engine to my car is a CDX and I'm going back to the breakers tomorrow to raid the cruise control from it  :) Can I remove the stalk behind the steering wheel without removing the steering wheel first? The Haynes manual mentions that it unclips and slides off but says to remove the wheel first, just wondered if there was a short cut??

Omega General Help / Resetting EML
« on: 06 October 2006, 21:49:50 »
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to reset the engine management light on the Simtec 56 ECU? Mine displays 4 digit (P?) codes during the paperclip test. The Topbuzz website says each code will be repeated 3 times before moving onto the next, mine only shows each code once before moving onto the next one. Topbuzz also says to clear the codes, turn ignition on and off 30 times with a 5 second pause between each time. I tried this and the codes were still there, am I doing something wrong?

Omega General Help / Auxillary drive belt route
« on: 04 October 2006, 15:53:14 »
Bloody typical! I managed to fit the entire engine, hoses, wires etc but I'll be damned if I can work out the route that the auxillary drive belt takes  :-[ I bought a new one and it seems to be the same size as the one that came with the car but both seem a mile too big. Can anyone provide me with the correct route on a 2ltr DOHC with power steering and Air con pulleys please. Mr Haynes just says to note the route when you remove the old one, not much use if the old one isn't fixed on in the first place  >:(

I'm also a bit concered that the wiring harness to the alternator and starter motor is very close to the alternator pulley. Anyone got a pic of this as well?

Omega General Help / Am I missing something important??
« on: 26 September 2006, 16:21:59 »
Hi guys, I refitted the auto box into the GLS today and after connecting up the wiring, I suspect I'm missing a sensor from the exhaust. There's a rectangular 4 pin plug hanging down the passenger side of the auto box and an empty threaded hole in the exhaust, just before the lambda sensor. I've marked it on the accompanying picture. Can anyone tel me what should be there? The car is a 2ltr auto estate, 1999 facelift model.

Cheers Jim

Omega General Help / Just to say thank you
« on: 16 September 2006, 09:36:38 »
I've only been on this forum for a couple of weeks and have asked loads of questions so far regarding my engine. I'd just like to say a huge thanks to everyone who has been so friendly and helpful with advice etc. This really is a great forum and a wealth of information for a newbie like myself. Well done guys, all the help is really appreciated. Hopefully as I learn more about the Omega, I can also be in a position to offer some help in the future.  :)

Omega General Help / Mini facelift help??
« on: 13 September 2006, 17:39:03 »
Hi guys, I've found an Omega in a local breakers which I think has the same 2ltr engine as mine. My car is registered on 18/11/99, has the window switches on the door and the grill is part of the bonnet. The motor I'm looking at is an s or t reg (no plates!) has the switches on the centre consul, grill seperate from bonnet. I crawled underneath and from what I can see, the sump is the small metal pan on the large alloy housing. Would this pre facelift car be fitted with the later engine with balance shafts? Am I right in thinking that the earlier engines without balance shafts had a large metal sump? Any pics of the earlier sump would be appreciated so that I can distinguish between the two.
If this is the right engine it would save me a lot of hassle rebuilding mine and I could just throw it in a corner just in case!! I'm hoping to go back to the breakers tomorrow so any answers tonight would be really appreciated  ;)

Omega General Help / Is my engine knackered after all??
« on: 11 September 2006, 18:15:27 »
Hi guys, I decided to delve a bit deeper into my supposedly knackered 2lt engine from the 1999 GLS that I bought the other week. The story was that they thought it had been run low on oil with lots off knocking noises and a blown head gasket. I whipped the balance shafts off and inspected all the crank bearings and conrod bearings. All looked to be in good condition in keeping with a 98k mile engine. definitely not starved of oil then  :) The piston bores are also excellent and there is no piston slap either. Then I turned my attention to the cylinder head. have a look at this pic!

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l193/mijfife/head003.jpg

I can only assume that the gasket had gone and the car has been driven for quite a while as I've never seen a breach like this before! Id also assume that this was the cause of the knocking noises??
So the dilema is, do I go with my original block, and source another head? I assume a cylinder head from an earlier 2ltr will fit okay? The Haynes manual says to renew the big end cap bolts and cylinder head bolts, do they stretch when fitted?
I'd be interested in what you think.

Cheers Jim

Omega General Help / What Engine?? Advice needed please!
« on: 04 September 2006, 16:55:45 »
Hi all,
I collected my 1999 GLS estate yesterday, complete with knackered engine, as I posted in the Newbie secton last week  :) I'm reckoning the easiest course of action will be to source another engine as the original was run low on oil and severley cooked. My engine code is X20XEV, will an engine from an earlier 2ltr Omega fit okay or will I need to source one from a later car? I believe the later engines had balancer shafts etc fitted, how much difference does this make? Did they change the engine again at a later date or will any post 1999 unit do?
As mine is an auto, is there anything I should watch out for regarding the torque converter when refitting? it's been out of the car for a few months.

Any advice greatfully received and if you've got a decent engine kicking about (or complete car for spares) in Central Scotland, all the better  ;)

Many Thanks, Jim
