Omega General Help / v6-x20xev transplant
« on: 12 September 2017, 06:49:36 »
Hi!

I've came across a very mint omega v6, in terms of interior and bodywork, but with knackered engine. I'm interested in gettinig back on road, but with X20XEV engine, as it would be daily runner, and want it to be easy for maintainance.

I know in general what would I need (engine with loom and all the coolant hoses, ECU+immobiliser, gearbox, propshaft, diff, exhaust) but need definite info, a sort of shopping list, to be sure I didn't forget something. Are the subframes different?

TIA

Omega General Help / 2.5 TD exhaust diameter
« on: 17 May 2017, 18:12:53 »
Hi!

Can anybody confirm what is the outside diameter of the exhaust pipes on 2.5TD (BMW lump, 130bhp)?
I'm talking about the pipes in front and after the central muffler - in other words, the pipe that is just under the drive shaft, as well as one that goes from central muffler to rear muffler.

From what I've found, they are 2.5" (63.5mm), but that's not for certain.

Thanks in advance!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Footwell loom
« on: 20 April 2017, 19:47:11 »
What wires (for which units) are located in the looms that are located on drivers an passangers footwell?

Obviouslly, some of the wires are for door looms, seats. But what else? And, more important - anything vital?

Omega General Help / High coolant pressure perhaps
« on: 04 April 2017, 09:09:49 »
How hard should the coolant hoses (i.e. top rad hose) feel on a V6, when on normal temp (~95°C)? What is the V6 coolant system normal operating pressure?

It's normal to have some pressure, but I have a feeling that I have too much coolant pressure - when I squeeze top or bottom coolant hose (when engine is hot), they feel quite hard.

No overheating - usually runs around 92°C. Even when it gets to 98°C, fans kick in and bring it down in under a minute.
No noticable loss of coolant.

There was always noticable coolant pressure, but I'm under impression that there is more now than there was before - or I'm just being paranoid?

Omega General Help / exhaust modification
« on: 29 March 2017, 12:14:27 »
I have some ideas about exhaust modifications. First, some intro:

1) I had my car decated and whole cat-back system made from aluminisied steel by a local exhaust shop – it is OK in quality, sound a bit louder which is OK, but it had a nasty knocking sound on hard acceleration (drove me nuts) – after a lot of investigation, I've concluded that it was because there was no cats, just a stright pipe followed by two near 90°bends. And, from what I've learned after next step – lost some low-down torque.
2) after that, I've had a pair of small mufflers installed in a position where cats orginial were – more quiet, and knocking on acceleration disapeared – it sounded very OEM like, and I've noticed an increase in low down torque. It was all nice for some time, but after a while, this mufflers, which are not not high quality TBH, started to have a bad sound on acceleration – I think that fiberglass in which the steel mesh is wrapped has burned out. I guess that main cause for this was LPG system that was overfueling for some time – now repaired (LPG deinstaled  ). So, it'll need to do something about this.

For now, I won't be needing cats (and most probably never, as I've found a loop hole for MOT here in Croatia), so I'm not considering going back to OEM setup ATM. Also, finding a decent second-hand cats for V6 here is almost impossible (and having them shipped from UK is to expensive due to the size).
I could redo the current setup, but with some more quality mufflers. But there is no guarantee it won't have the same probs.

Omega General Help / Idler arm parts
« on: 09 March 2017, 08:48:49 »
I'm doing the preparations for chaning the idler arm, and wanted to check two items, from the picture in link:

- item 13 - cap, no.90305712
- item 18 - washer, no.90538145

http://ecat24.com/opel/catalog/part/1/30/472/4398/34673,34672,34668/

Are these just plain washers? What dimensiosn?

Thing is, my steering arm has been changed and reworked for several times over the years, and I'm not sure if I have all the parts on it at the moment. And I want to make a correct assemby this time.

Omega General Help / tie-rod tapper spliting
« on: 03 March 2017, 07:25:41 »
Gentleman,

how do you split tapers when you change tie-rods?
Do you use splitting tools (there are several variants)?
Or do you use a hammers (two hammers on the 'eye' part, or hammer on nut with other as counterweight)?

I've planed to borrow a splitting tool, but apparently nobody uses them - everybody uses hammers.

Omega General Help / Subframe alignement
« on: 02 February 2017, 09:27:18 »
Some time ago I have removed the front subframe, and it seems I didn't manage to align it properly when refitting (I did make align markings on frame and chassis, but ones on subframe were almost entirely washed out while cleanging with jet-washer  :-[ ).

At first, it seemed OK, but over time I've notticed a bit of understeer in itght left turns, and sometimes it doesn't return the steering wheel from almost-full-lock -> so I suspect not enough castor. Did some preliminary measurements:
- measured wheelbase, left and right side - right side is ~5 mm shorter (yes, I know that it could be that rear axle is not aligned, but I'll go with this ATM) .
- measured (compared) camber - they are approximately the same.

So, this is what I plan to do:
- move the subframe in front-back direction, until I get a correct castor values
- check camber angle, check front-to back axle vertical plane alignement
- if vertical palne alignement not OK - move front subframe in left-right direction.
- if vertical plane aligment is OK - check and adjust camber at hub-to-shock absorber connection
- at the end, adjust toe

Does this seem like a good procedure?

General Car Chat / Something new and unusual for my car
« on: 14 December 2016, 08:40:40 »
I wanted to get something for my car, as I haven't done any changes to the current look for a while, and it was getting a bit old.

So, I got my self a set of this rims:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8qtn8eDE85uZm11VVktUDBVWGM

You might thing - what in heck I need this old rims for? I wanted something different, and fancied this rims from the time I had carlton, but never had them as I find that 15" rims on omega come with too high tyre sidewall, and this doesn't look good IMO. But, then an idea came in my head - here is an visuallisation (not my car):

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8qtn8eDE85uVUJLa2pybEY0NHc
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8qtn8eDE85uNVlqeFl4UXptREE

IMO, it's different than usual car 'tunning' pattern, and it looks great.

PS. Cant upload to imageshack, as firewall blocks me.

General Car Chat / Military paint
« on: 28 November 2016, 14:35:42 »
Just wnadering - has anybody used military paint?
Something like this:
http://www.paints4trade.com/military-vehicle-paint-2151-p.asp?uid=21D1699D-5B09-49C0-A15F-D89537E11A0A

I'm planing to repaint wifes car, and don't want to do usual car respray. It's too expensive, and I want to try some ideas I have. I will probably repaint it into satin black or satin dark grey, and give some strong colors to details.

I found out about military paint. From what I see, it would be perfect for this application, as it is satin or matt, and it is applied by roller or brush. Perfect for me. It seems to be often used in the UK (mostly for defenders and similar real offroaders), so I'm hopping that somebody can give some more info on this.

Omega General Help / wide steel rims
« on: 27 October 2016, 14:17:01 »
Does anybody have any photos of omega on wide steel rims ('banded steelies')?

Been toying with this idea in my head for a while, as I could 'build' the rims with width and, more important, ET I would like.

Omega General Help / Handbrake retainer modification
« on: 06 October 2016, 10:26:29 »
Handbrake retainer pins on my '96 had pulled trough backing plate.
First try was to place a 'washer' with rectangular slot from behind, but this failed, as there is not enough space form behind to manuover.
Now I have idea (two of them, actually):

a) slide in the retainer from the behind (not sure if there will be enough space - front hole might be doable, but rear is hidden by rear arm part that holds the caliper)

b) use bolts, aero-nuts and washers insted - I can choose the length of the bolt (cca 60mm), it could be installed from both sides,  I can control the spring tension by how deep the nut is screwed in, and it will be easire to install (thread gradually presses the spring). And the tension from the spring + self-braking of the aero-nut should prevent it from looseing.

What do you think about idea b)

General Car Chat / OEM vs pattern
« on: 30 September 2016, 09:40:08 »
I have noticed in several threads that there is a disscusion about OEM parts vs replacement parts made by manufacturers who made the OEM part (i.e. bosch/siemens for crank sensor or coil pack).

There is an argument that buyer (in this case GM) prevents part manufacturer to make and sell parts as their own.
Now, I'm sure that this is true for new, current cars.
However, I'm under impression that this 'ban' doens't last forever.
I'm quite sure that, after certain period of time from start of production run, manufacturer is allowed to sell this parts as their own.

What do you think?

If my theory is correct, that would mean that replacement parts made by factories that were OEM supplier should be as same quality as OEM.

I dont like that original supplier parts are put in the same bin as some cheap ebay patterns.

General Car Chat / Is omega designed by pininfarina
« on: 29 September 2016, 14:27:01 »
While looking for something else, I've came across on wikipedia that Omega was designed by pininfarina.
Never heard of it before, TBH.

Can somebody verify?

After some digging, only found several pics of preproduction PFL in windtunnel (the bumper is slightly differnet around fog lights.
