Seen it at least 3 times now, but am still shocked and horrified each time I see the footage of David Purley desperately trying to help Roger Williamson.

Not for the faint hearted.

Found the comments at the start chilling, "they just threw a blanket over the car, the race carried on"

As a kid I always remember Jackie Stewart leading the race from start to finish. He was a great driver although by his own admission probably not as good as Jim Clark.

However, In my opinion his piety got the better of him when it came to safety. Do we really want to make every activity 'risk free'?

The inherent danger is part of the attraction.

That's the way it was then. The world is a very different place nowadays.
David Purley later had a big accident which was so bad it got him into the Guiness book of records for surviving the 179 g impact !  It  shattered his legs (among other things) and this finished his career. The car was so badly mangled it became an exhibit at the Donington museum.
He then took up flying Pitt special stunt planes and was killed when he crashed one of them.

Not a very good pic, but it clearly shows the whole drivers cockpit isn't there any more. The front wheels are where the driver sits.

The inherent danger is part of the attraction.

In his day it was almost akin to becoming a kamikaze pilot. Racing drivers were expendable commodities and when one was killed they just put another one in the car without a second thought. Colin Chapman had a reputation of being pretty heartless about it, although the death of Clark affected him as everyone was in awe of him. Clark was the Senna of the 60,s.
Things had to change, and Stewart  was a brave man to take on all the vested interest to do it. It did imo go too far though.
This was never clearer than during the Schumacher era when he regularily pulled cynical brutal moves on people which might well have got him and them killed previously, and should have had no place in open wheel racing. He seemed to think it wasn't possible to get hurt and had no respect for anyones safety imo.

It wasn't just the safety on the track. Stewart talks about borrowing spanners from spectators to remove him from the car & drivers being taken by part time ambulance drivers to a hospital that was shut.

Yep, Sid Watkins' book talks about this, and is a good read. It's almost as if it didn't occur to them that they might benefit from as much as a st. John's ambulance parked up at the track just in case. :o
