mot + service
« on: 23 February 2021, 16:23:09 »

its that time of year for a m.o.t & service. its an oil query - does a vehicle with stop - start tech need a special oil ( tech manual specifies  0/30 synthetic ) ,last year opie oil recommended Total Quartz which cost me nearly half of as much that ep were wanting. also if a new battery is ever needed , not a lot of change out of £ 450 whats wrong when that time comes of getting a good amperage & sticking that on.  :-\

If that's what the manual calls for...  :-\

AGM batteries are better suited to being hammered by stop start systems. And they're typically 2-3 times the price of a traditional battery.

Unfortunately that's the price you pay for 50-60mpg and £30 rfl...

Lidl were doing one of their 'specials' recently on Petronas oil, supplying it in 1 litre containers of various viscosities.. Not sure of the grade or the API spec, but may be worth calling in...but you may well get the same oil in the correct grade elsewhere for less in 5 litre containers.
I'm sure you are aware of the importance of the correct spec of oil for your car; not just the viscosity but the API rating too. Gone are the days of just 'bunging' anything in! :D
As regards AGM batteries, some vehicles require replacement AGM batteries to be programmed to the car, using the QR code; basically so that the car 'knows' it has a new battery relative to the now different state of charge.
Sounds ridiculous, but there you have it....
There are EFB batteries which are a cheaper alternative to AGM batteries, and they are also suitable for Stop/ Start vehicles. Honda fit them as OEM equipment.

If its a stp/start soot chucker, yes it will need a better spec oil, as it will be equipped with a DPF.  All DPF cars need low ash oils of exactly the right spec.

Online "what oil for my car" checkers are often wrong, so it must meet the spec listed in the glovebox manual - the actual manufacturer spec number, not the viscosity or anything else.

Somebody on the Jag forum shoved in what ECP "recommended" into his £85k XJ, and shagged the DPF in under 200 miles :o

If you had wanted a 1,500kg plastic go cart you would have bought one... 30 mpg is the price of being able to tow a 3.5t porta potti across a field ;D

Are you saying that he actually did it himself and had not taken it to a dealer.?  :o Has that invalidated his warranty?  ;)

Its not just diesels that need specific oil, modern direct injection petrol do to.

The wrong oil can melt the pistons as some Ecoboost owners can testify

One thing, if you have stop and start on your car, the battery is different, EG AGM/Calcium.

DO NOT USE A STANDARD BATTERY CHARGER. You need one that can charge these properly.
