V6 cam cover/ gaskets.
« on: 09 January 2007, 07:22:56 »

Gents, I'm already registered on VXON, found this site and noticed a few familiar names, nice to have a specific site for Omegas only..

Question:
I did my cam covers about 3 mths ago with non genuine parts ( Please don't laugh). The originals were only leaking on the right hand bank, then when removed they were rock hard in a few places...  Since putting the new ones on they now leak "Bloody everywhere"  they were perfect at first!  I also used the green sealant as per VX, I notice that you stipulate black  90485251...  is there a reason for this,  also do you think that my covers may have warped this quickly, or is it just knackerd gaskets again?  I beleive that the breathers were OK I could blow thru them...  with slight resistance...

Any advice appreciated..

Cheers Dave C

I am yet to see a warped cover.....I am also yet to see a non-gen seal which is any good so I would guess that is the problem.

The green goo is a metal to metal sealent and very brittle (it probably wont set very well either on the cam covers), the black stuff is more like a silicon sealent and hence flexible and does a much better job.

Following onto this whether there is any truth to it the black sealant has been specified by vx for a sump  bonding sealant, this is what my local Vx parts department guy said as he was trying to sell me the green goo, stuck to my guns and got the black sealant.

Previously when I did my rocker cover gasket I used the green snot and just recently when I removed my rocker cover there was signs of where the goo had turned brown and brittle which possibly caused the leak.

Welcome to the site :)

As others have said, techie Qs in the Omega Help section will get better exposure.

As others have also said, Vx genuine cam cover seals, and the black stuff...   ...when you do it again, check the breathers again, see if its starting to build up again...

Hi Dave and welcome aboard. :y Had a similar problem with mine a year or so ago - you need to make sure the crankcase breathers are cleaned when doing the rocker cover gaskets.

Gents,
Many thanks for the warm welcome to the forum.  As far as the gaskets go, got some VX on order and I've also got the propper sealant coming too, "Thanx to you Boys from the Black Stuff"....

Will let you know how I get on..

Cheers DC
