Differential oil fill plug knackered
« on: 07 October 2009, 08:37:43 »

just a quick question, I drained my diff oil to change it for some fresh stuff and the fill plug has rusted and rounded, problem is I need to take it to a garage that has some heat to remove it, how long can I drive the car with no oil in the differential?

Hi
There is a breather on top of the diff, you could add the oil through that (after removing the plastic breather to reveal the hole).  You could just add the correct quantity of oil as per WSM and leave it at that on the assumption the level was correct, or just stick some in to get you to the garage.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

A couple of hundred yards at a guess. ;)

I would try to add it via the breather.

I guess the breather is the plastic cap thing on the top of the diff, how does it come off, does it just pop off or break off?
