Remember that little water leak...
« on: 22 May 2020, 12:49:27 »

Well, it's just grown legs...

When the house was built, they put a double skin in as the garage ceiling, and being the late '50s/early '60s, they obviously felt that 1/4" asbestos board was the best way to do this.

Fast forward to the early '90s and the garage was shortened to create some more space in the new kitchen extension. Of course, the left the asbestos in place.

Fast forward to now. The garage ceiling needs to be removed, partly because it's asbestos, and partly to ensure that the water hasn't caused further, hidden damage to the joists etc as it had soaked down over time.

Had the news today, that they want to remove ALL the asbestos rather than simply the current garage ceiling, so they now want to remove the end wall in order to get it down where it encroaches into the kitchen. So the kitchen has to be cleared along with the all the plumbing including gas and much of the wiring as it's all in/through that wall.

All to avoid cutting the asbestos at the wall...

Still, at least it's not raining. ::)

Time will tell... If it's at their insistence, the I would have thought so :-\

It's being reassessed at some point as initially the asbestos people thought they would simply slice it at the end of the garage.

The final straw would probably be that the joist is rotten, which would see two upstairs walls, airing cupboard and landing taken out. Not that they're structural, but even so.

Original estimate was about 1% of property value, so there is some scope...

I wouldn't use a grinder... Too much dust, and you can't get masks for love nor money (God alone knows why :D)

And the tip won't currently take it.

But otherwise a valid observation  ;D
