Depends on the make of the dryer  ;D  :-X 

as for altering the fixed wiring , to include a fused connection unit ,it depends on many location specific factors

plus ,this is OOF , it might be connected to an old wylex re-wirable fuse box from 50 years ago and mounted on an asbestos board ,so bigger problems to be had  ;D

Fireproof then  :)
but if your removing ALL asbestos time for a rewire and new consumer unit with residual current ,over current and surge protection  :)

so ,as well as the paddling pool to bath in ,bucket to go toilet in , you will need a candle (light,cooking,heating)  ;D

Its not really recommended to run high power devices through extension leads, as a permenent fixture.

I tumble dryer will be 2.5-3kw, and as you have already found out, easily capable of melting stuff.  Then, unnoticed, thats how fires start.
