Omega General Help / Re: Urgent Advice Please

Perhaps disconnect, clean and re-seat.

Short cut may be jubilee clips in addition to the clamps as a short cut and see if it can be tightened a bit further.  If the area or any pipes are rotten then perhaps new or used parts.  Seems pretty accessible but I don't know your car to say how you would replenish the leaked or fluid lost on refit.

Cheers.

$40-45 for cheapies...

About $75-80 for the ACDelco ones.

And $150 from the Cadillac dealer.
Try dpart1122 on eBay very helpful with genuine GM parts and great prices located in USA.

Cheers.

hi all, im having a problem with the battery on my Elite, after not using it for a few days last week the battery was flat, i jumped it then went for a drive for about 20 miles mostly motorway and all was fine, well after fitting a new crank sensor on wednesday i took it for a drive for about 30 miles and it started after with no problem, i went to use it today and there was only just ehough power to open the doors, but nothing when i tried to start it, this is the third time this has happened! im going to look at it tomorrow but is this a common thing with omega's?

jim
Did you install any after market accessories lately?  If you did, some of these can keep the BCM alive and draining.  I had this issue when I tried to install a so called compatible CD changer in mine.

Just a wild thought!

Noisey followers (no tappets on these cars).

Give it an oil change and put in some lifter treatment
It is still tapping on start but not right away.  When the RPM drops to about 800 and lasts for 3-5 minutes.  I used Wyn's Engine tune 345ml which claimed to free/quieten noisy lifters abot a week ago with fresh oil.  Should I continue to wait or any other additive like Risolene, etc.?

Also Marks DTM Calibration if you want to chuckle or comment on a novice idea in the following,

Thank you.

I changed the oil and cleaned the sump, pickup tube and everything is squeaky clean.  Fresh oil and filter.

When I started this morning, no noise but as the car warmed up the noise started around 800 RPM.  The noise appears little different as though some mechanical rubbing rather than tapping before and it is too slow to be related to single rotation of cams (as far as I can think).  I did loosen the top Alternator bolt (to get the SAI pipe holding bracket out of the way for removing timing cover) but never totally tightened it back as I need to hold it from the back of the alternator and not easily accessible.  It is quite tight but not to spec.

The noise eventually does go away when the car is fully warmed up though.  So only during the first 5-10 minutes from cold start.

Appreciate guidance.

PS:  The original tapping type of faster pitch sound is gone.
Just a note that I put in a new timing belt and tightened it per OOF video to the top mark on the Tensioner as suggested for a new belt.  I hope it is not causing one of the Cam bearings to go (say Cams 1 or 2 as the sound is definitely right sided, or O/S for UK reference)

do you think the Hydraulic tappets are not getting enough oil at the start?  I believe it is recommended to change the oil after breather box cleaning up in case the pickup tube gets partially blocked, etc., even though the breather box appeared pretty clean but the breather tubes assembly was pretty mucked up and I kept working on it till the flow was clean.

I did not replace any washers or gaskets even though I had a set of new ones.

Thanks.

Just an Update:

I have replaced the following as per OOF maintenance guide,

Breather bridge to plenum seal 1 off required - 90467543
Breather bridge to throttle O ring 2 off required (4 off on extended plenums) - 90500983

Additionally, I have drained the oil and will be cleaning the lower sump and checking for oil pickup tube and replacing it if needed as I bought a spare.  Will update but thinking positive right now.

Cheers and any comments still welcome.

Tons of carb cleaner to clean the 4 tubes assembly and the front vanes.  The rubber connections at the back I cleaned with water and again tried to let let dry the tubes before installing.  I have driven about a hundred miles now.  I tried to dry out the Plenum and pipes for a day after cleaning as I did not put these on right away.

Thanks.

Omega General Help / Tapping sound Cyls 1 3 5 after Breather cleaned
« on: 03 September 2010, 14:46:19 »
I replaced the timing belt and cleaned the breather system per guidance at OOF and OOF cam video.

Car runs extremely well with smooth idle after warm up.  There are no external signs of any oil or any fluid leaks anywhere in the engine bay.

On start up I am hearing tapping type sound which goes away after couple of minutes.  I changed the oil about 1000 miles ago and has not changed it since breather cleaning.

Is it sticking valves, something more serious or should I be doing any additives, engine flush or just an oil change.

Regards.

Omega General Help / Manually turning crank to clean lifter follower!
« on: 08 September 2010, 15:04:18 »
Just wondering if there is benefit to manually turning crank for 6 to 12 revolutions to push out gunk from lifters followers!  My lifters are noisy on start up in the right bank.  I have added the lifter treatment and so far while driving for about 60 miles it has not fully solved the issue.

My car is quiet but occasionally makes tapping noises when warming up.  When I changed the cambelt two weeks ago, I turned the crank few times to get timing perfect.  When I started it tapped for a few minutes and then settled to be quiet.

Just not experienced enough to get the lifter/followers out to clean up unless these can be accessed without removing the cam but just the cam cover.

Thanks any comments and suggestions of experience appreciated.

PS:  The concept is that as you manually turn the crank slowly it could have the effect of squeezing out the bad stuff just like in the OOF maintenance guide which actually will ensure 100% correctness but quite involved for novice like me.

I'll keep an eye on it till I get a replacement. I couldn't blow through it at all when I got it, but despite the straw it's clear now. There was a load of gunk inside! Silly me, new one required! Thanks again!
I flushed mine with water hose after doing loads and loads of carb cleaner till the crab cleaner was coming out and staying clean.  After the water I blew clean high pressure air and let it stay out before installing the next day.

If it helps to get the straw out.

Cheers.

I can see some rain water dripping from under the skuttle near the dis /bulkhead area. Must be getting in where windscreen meets skuttle. Assuming its a wet dis causing the problem will it improve as it dries out or would you think new one required. Are these dealer only or are ebay ones ok?
Thanks, mikeh.
I have used dielectric clear rubbery sealent to great advantage in my Catera while seating the coil pack.  Had exactly the same problem and never again.

All h*ll breaks loose in heavy rain and the scuttle stuff can only do so much.  There are splashes up and down with the fans going, which do dry up fast in the hotter areas.

Good luck.   ;)

I was wondering if it is a no-no to actually inject little higher pressure water say from a pressure washer to blow out the gunk without damaging the systems.  This way you can also easily inject detergent and water alternately without rejigging.

Cheers.
The cooling system is designed to run at a maximum of 14psi so a pressure washer (750psi to 1300psi) is not going to do it any favours I fear.
Andy H, I was thinking of suitable loose coupling or simply keeping close enough with some plastic funnel on it but the spray could introduce lot of scrubbing as it will become a mix of air and water.  One has to be comfortable managing the pressure washer though without introducing the full pressure.  You are right about the heater maximum PSI limit and the Pressure washer being quite a mismatch.

I recently flushed my coolant per the OOF directions as I did a cam belt and water pump and had little to lose not do it the same time.  I wish I had though about this I would have tried it.

Cheers.

I did the following,

1.  Cleaned mating surface lightly with wet emery per OOF maintenance guide.

2.  I installed the O ring (sorry Mark DTM) for bad English.  I lightly grease the O ring (per OOF maintenance guide) before seating it in the Water Pump groove.

3.  I tigtened the bolts per Mark DTM torque spec of 25NM in the OOF maintenance guide.

I cleaned the area with fresh water and vaccuum to remove any residues of coolant, etc.

4.  Installed everything back, so far so good.

ElitePete thanks. I thought the bolts were reachable too but all that coolant (almost 6L) around the timing belt, etc., did not give me a good feeling so I bit the bullet and removed the Timing belt cover per OOF DVD.  However, definitely good idea if one needs to just torque check the bolts which in my case were torqued right but the O ring was the issue.

Much obliged in your comments and time. :y
