Specialists nr Sheffield -oil pressure prob 2.2DTi
« on: 24 May 2010, 16:55:02 »

Hello all, my 86,000 mile 2.2 DTi has started showing a flickering oil light when idling warm.

Disappears when the engine is revved past idle and no nasty noises but I'd like to catch this and make sure it's not going to turn nasty...

I have changed oil and filter to see if that would help - I did also buy a new oil sender but I haven't so far spotted where it lives - hidden somewhere near the filter??

Anyway I'd be happy to track down any trustworthy garage in Sheffield or reasonably nearby, or if any of the OOF traveling mechanics are interested please let me know.

And to be clear, this will be a paid job for whoever does it, no favours required, if you can do this job then your time is valuable, to me at least!!

Thanks everybody....

Possibly a sender fault but until it's changed you cant be too carefull, if the problem carries on after it has been changed try and fit an oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on it.

In the mean time do you know what oil was used on the oil change, and is the tickover as oer normal or is it running a tad under the specified idle rpm.

Thanks Skruntie, sorry I did not see this reply  before, should have had an email notification.

The oil was good quality and correct grade, I think the tickover is about right, around 750 rpm on the rev counter.

Gauge would not be a problem if only I could work out where the sender lives to tap it in...

I see you are in S Yorkshire, any ideas for a decent garage if the worst comes to the worst?

Thanks again

Thanks again to Skruntie for his help...

On the third try I've found the location of the oil pressure switch/sender on my omega 2.2 DTi engine, it lives under the alternator and can be found by touch - put your hand under the alternator and you will find a cable, follow this towards the engine block and you have the switch.
To release the lead you have to squeeze the connector.
The sensor screws out, 24mm ring spanner (same as tow bar retaining bolts) required, or a very deep socket since the connector is very tall above the switch.
My replacement switch needed a 22mm spanner for tightening, plus a copper sealing washer.
Now need to see if that has cured the original problem...

Sorry TestOmega - I did mean to post, but I wanted to give the car a thorough test at full m/way and hot day conditions.
The new sender has 'cured' the problem, I get the oil light on start up, fairly quickly out as I would hope, and stays off so a good outcome fingers crossed.
The new sender is not a Vauxhall/GM part and noticeably has a much larger diameter port (actual threads etc seem identical.
Hope you get a happy ending to your problems.

I did eventually track down the oil pressure sender location, and swapping this cured it - which was nice news, but I did track down your recommended garage and will give them a try next time I need any work.

Nice one, Check Pete out, bloody good guy and local if he is still doing repairs, but it's a few years since I last used him, and if you drop the car off at least you can walk home.  :y
