Omega General Help / R25/R28 gearbox ratios
« on: 13 July 2021, 09:19:09 »
My 5 speed manual omega has the code R25/R28 on the gearbox, i can find the ratios for R25 and for R28, but not sure what it means when both codes are on the box..

Does anyone know what ratios this gearbox has?

Omega General Help / Omega 6-speed manual ratios
« on: 10 July 2021, 17:46:50 »
Good day all,

The early manual omega's had a 6-speed getrag box - I think it was designated the R26..

Does anyone know the exact gear ratio's and possibly the final drive ratio on those cars?
I can't seem to find the info anywhere.

Thanks in advance

General Car Chat / Complete custom EGR blankoff kit
« on: 08 March 2020, 17:37:59 »
So as some of you know I'm bringing a x30xe back to life, and one of the first things I did was blank off the EGR system.

I decided to have fun with it, and had some templates lasercut to my custom design.. a nice and thick aluminum blankoff plate, with a stainless faceplate showing off some custom emblem, obviously sealed off at the intake with a flexoid gasket. Exhaust side just a blankoff bolt with copper washer.

Here's how it came out:

so 2 questions:

1. If I were to offer this as a complete kit, which includes:
- stainless faceplate
- ally blankoff plate
- Flexoid gasket
- Blankoff bolt
- copper washer

.. what would be a reasonable price for such a kit?

2. What emblem would be most popular with potential buyers, not limited to what I've already done (can draw up any design)

I look forward to the response.

Omega General Help / Secondary air injection system removal
« on: 07 February 2020, 20:43:12 »
It's in the way and it needs to go.

First prize is to remove it completely and blank off right at the exhaust flange, but access is proving a problem, so new plan is to keep the 2x pipes in place, blank them off where they tie into the center portion, and rip out the rest..

1. From there, the center portion goes from its silver canister to a single plastic vaccuum assisted valve. Can I chuck this out completely, or does it need to stay plugged in to keep the management happy?
2. I haven't traced the pipe beyond the valve yet, but I believe there's a pump somewhere in the system too.. Once again, can I bin the whole thing or does something need to stay plugged in?

Thanks in advance

Omega General Help / EGR deletion on x30xe
« on: 07 February 2020, 20:35:44 »
Hi gents,

I'm removing the EGR, making a blankoff plate on the intake and screwing in a blankoff plug on the exhaust manifold.

1. Do I need to retain the EGR valve? Do I just cable-tie it somewhere in the engine bay plugged in, or is there a more elegant solution?
2. Does anyone know offhand the thread of the hole in the exhaust manifold?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / ECU swap out
« on: 04 February 2020, 20:31:48 »
Hi guys,

I've recently posted a technical query about my omega and the wiring to some of the sensors.
https://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=146335.0

Question #1: can the ECU pop? - as my knowledge goes, most sensors have a power wire (12v), signal wire (0-5v) and a ground/earth. If the wires got swapped around due to incompetence, will something die permanently? I'd imagine if the 5v signal wire suddenly received 12v, something on the ECU would let it's smoke out? The original ECU starts the car, but I can't get rid of the faults from the sensors with dodgy wiring.

2. In preparation for finding out my ECU is poked, I ordered another one, as close to the same label as possible. I did not, however, receive the matching coded key and RFID ring. Is it possible to remove the encoded portion of the ECU to have it work without the corresponding key? Here in South Africa its common practice to "unlock" the motronic boxes on the corsas and astras as hardware is re-purposed from car to car, but the guy i send my ECU's to cannot "unlock" the omega box as the software he uses is not compatible with the chip.

Old ECU:

New ECU:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

I picked up a scruffy omega for cheap a while ago, sold as a non runner..

Reason why it was dirt cheap - it was an import from UK, no parts in South Africa so no-one wants to touch it, and it has been extensively hacked in the wiring department, not to mention a few damaged panels.

Issues I managed to resolve: from the ECU fault codes and general diagnostics, I replaced the coil pack, RHS knock sensor and a few other bits and pieces and eventually got the engine to start and fault codes down to a few.

Here are the ones that remain (in order of appearance):

12 - Initiation of diagnosis
94 - Hall effect switch - voltage high
21 - Throttle position sensor - voltage high
16 - Knock sensor 1 - no voltage change
73 - Mass air flow sensor - voltage low
17 - Knock sensor 2 - no voltage change
74 - Mass air flow sensor - voltage high
57 - Idle speed control valve - voltage low
59 - Inlet manifold valve 1 - voltage low
31 - Engine RPM signal (crankshaft sensor) - no signal

If anyone can provide advice to how i can diagnose these codes I would appreciate greatly. what is high voltage/ low voltage indicative of? open circuit and short circuit, or something else?

Current issues: Car was originally a 2.5 v6, but somewhere in its life it received a X30XE engine transplant.. from what I can tell, some of the connectors were different between the 2 engines (specifically the TPS and cam position sensor), and what the guys did was cut and splice wires in order to get everything reconnected.

Firstly the TPS - could someone please confirm for me which wires go to which pin out on the TPS, as shown below? (the connectors have been changed and modified to fit, so I'm not sure):

Secondly, the cam position sensor (what i assume is the "hall effect switch"):

Here's what I assume is the connector from the harness (please confirm):

Here's the actual sensor, with the connector all mutilated to suite the harness plug, but now pluggable both ways :(

The question:

I think it's quite possible that a 5v driver could have blown on the ECU, especially if the TPS and CPS run off the same 5v signal circuit..

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Newbie Welcome Area / Omega from Sunny South Africa
« on: 27 January 2020, 11:18:47 »
Hi everyone,

I've always been a massive Opel fan, only recently taken ownership of my first omega though, and it's a massive difference over the other opels I've owned, which are (in order of appearance):

1992 Opel Kadett "Cub" (1.4 converted to f.i.)
1985 Kadett GLS (2.4 16v)
1995 Calibra 2L 16v
1972 Opel Manta DL (1.9 with sidedrafts)
1974 Opel Manta GT (converted to 2.2 carb fed)
1964 Opel Kadett B 1.2

Omega's were released in SA on a very limited scale, either as 2.2 4cyl or 2.6 v6 versions, all of which were imported anyway.

My car started life as a 2.5 v6, bought new in the UK in 2002 (i think), and somewhere down the line was imported to South Africa, and received a 3.0 v6 transplant.

I bought the car for next to nothing, as it was running on 5 cylinders in limp mode with hundreds of faults, and finding spares in SA is proving challenging.

I'm hoping that with the forum's help I can finally get the car running 100% again.
