3.0 MV6 rough running after laid up
« on: 13 June 2023, 07:22:23 »

I’ve started using my 3.0 MV6 this month after long period of been off road other than MOT trips.

It’s very eager to start and runs fine majority of time.

There is old fuel in the car and I’ve added about £25 to the tank when I started running it.

It feels it goes down to 4 or 5 cylinders occasionally.

Thinking it could be the old fuel mix until it’s all been used up - I could then change fuel filter as maybe some muck in fuel tank/lines with it being laid up.

Just looking at the cheapest/obvious/easiest options first.

Could I guess be electrical (hopefully not coil pack - bummer to get to) as there has been no maintenance to the electrics for a few years now as always started ok.

It seems it occurs intermittently when engine under load

Brim it with a full tank of Shell V power along with a can of Wynns Fuel treatment/injector cleaner, give it a decent run and a bit of a thrashing and report back.

The symptoms you describe could be either the dis pack or partially blocked injectors.

Modern fuel doesn't age well so start there. Although the dis pack should be treated as a service item.

Thanks - hopefully it’ll clear itself without any surgery.

I’ve got a 100 mile run to do tomorrow and think I’ll take the Omega and get some quality juice in it. Hopefully it will burn through 🙏

Will report back

At 23mpg it shouldn't take long >:D

Well didn’t get my 100 mile trip in the end as rear tyres are due to be replaced and the current ones are showing age cracking despite good tread so didn’t fancy throwing it down the A1 at speed.

However I have run it a lot drier of fuel on local driving and now put a good dollop of quality new fuel at the Shell garage in our village. It seems to have resolved things as no missing or hiccuping 🙏🤞.

Hopefully we’re cured.
