Hello people, I guess this has been covered previously but I couldn't see an answer anywhere.
I have a 97 Select estate which has a damaged front bumper, I've just bought a good s/h one with fogs in. The wiring is clipped to the front bumper bar on the car but there is no front fog light switch on the dash - only a blank next to the rear fog switch. If I fit a just fit a switch will they work?

When you fitted the bumper, was the loom there by the horn to plug the fogs into?

If so, its just the switch

Also, the fog light switches can be removed from the main switch, and are physically the same regardless of front or rear, so you can swap the rear switch over to the blank switch to test. Which is nice

Re the loom, the temperature sensor wiring shares the fog light loom so should be plug and play

Possibly, in which case it's another small black one in the panel under the steering column, but don't remember needing one when I added fogs to my GLS

A 97 car will probably have the telltale light which shows the fogs are on in the switch itself. Later ones had it in the instrument i think. Led which indicates fogs on are part of the circuit board on the main light switch. Also there are two types og fog switches. The old type with a clear square for the indication light and the new type without this. With fog switches renoved you should be able to see if there are leds on the circuit board on the main switch.

I'm a bit confused by all this very helpful help, it has the wiring connectors at the front to plug straight in tothe lights, the rear fog switch has a clear window that lights up orange, and to the left of it is a blank. It doesn't look like there is any wiring behind the blank, but the suggestion to use the rear switch makes sense. I'll wire them up at the weekend and try this out. Thanks for all the reply-ers

The slight confusion stems from the fact that it could be Pre or mid face-lift and one of the things they changed was the light switch.

At least if the loom is present then the odds are definitely in your favour

If the last *LETTER* of the VIN is a T or V, then a '97 car is PFL. If it W, then a 97 car is MFL.

You will need either the switch, or complete headlight switch block, which I might have £10 delivered.

They work quite well at illuminating the kerb/verge in heavy fog.

Obviously the world is full of 'tards who think they should have them on all the time, as the opps you I'm OK Jack attitude spreads

agree ,  the other night I relied upon them to stay in touch with the nearside & kept running into pockets of mist/ fog behind the South Downs. Not helped by another car, that had latched onto me & was using me to light his way ahead

That's how I found out why the headlights of my Smart so so sh1te years back. They were boss eyed because one of the bulbs wasn't seated correctly

Had that conversation at the Mot. Culprit blew, so replaced both, which is easiest done by removing the unit

Shall tweak the unit position to compensate and readjust the horizontal beam Also need to replace the number plate, but that's a different story...
