climate weirdness
« on: 09 May 2008, 14:47:01 »

every so often... increasingly so....  my aircon/climate system behaves weirdly....

some times, no matter what temperature is selected , only cold air gets blown in...   and often at a higher than expected fan speed....UNLESS , it's on hi, when it blows roasting hot , no problem... and Lo, when it's pretty cold.... not quite icy, but chilly enough....

other times, it behaves as it should.....

any ideas?

There is a small air sampling fan in the climate panel the drive circuitry for which gives up the ghost.

The results are varied becausesometimes it will work fine, others its hit and miss as it runs at full speed, half speed or not at all.

So, what happens as a result is that the air temp sensor now starts to get heated by the dash components rather than the cabin air that should be drawn over it if the fan is working.

The result is that you have to keep increasing the set temp to get warm air until its only warm (hot!) on Hi because the temp sensor already thinks the cabin is bloody hot.

To fix, I normaly totally remove the sampling fan and fit a 25mm x 10mm fan for a pc.....costs about a fiver and takes about an hour.

ahh....     I forsee a dashboard adventure then...

Actually,  took it for a drive this afternoon....  having been out all day in to fiddling randomly to see what happens...

if I run the aircon....  the engine runs at about 97.5 degrees...    if i leave the aircon/climate system switched off it runs at the normal 95.

there's no coolant being lost or anything....

surely, if the fans are running for the aircon....  it should, if anything run a little cooler.... ??   i'm sure that's what it used to do anyway...   it's just this week it's started acting up.. typical....

is this likely to be related to the fan jobby??

don't think i've got any 25x10 fans to hand....     just a couple of spare "stock" CPU fans...

so I guess I'll have to order one...

any chance you could posta link to one Mark..?? so i get the right thing in the first place.......

With the aircon on it will run hotter.....

.....the reason being that the aircon condenser is mounted in front of the rad and although there are 2 extra fans running, the aircon rad is still pre-heating the air before it passes over the engine rad.....the net result.....a slightly higher engine temp because the cooling capability of the rad is effetively reduced.
