If it is important they can leave a message or send a text.

If it is a scam you can end up calling a premium rate number without realising it. Have you tried an internet search for those numbers?

you *might* miss out on a $million pay out on your uncles will in Nigeria but that is a chance I am prepared to take.

As above, Indian call centres have worked out how to spoof telephone numbers.

Don't trust any incoming call. The number may say MyBank, but it probably isn't.

I always ignore unknown numbers and assume that they are scammers.   ;)

As said above if its important they can leave a message or text me, and even then I'll check for a website and check the number against the one on the website.  :y

Indeed, never ring back missed calls or texts.  Number spoofing is trivial.

Ringing the number back only encourages more calls as you have just confirmed that the number is a) in use, and b)a prime candidate for bothery.

I never answer calls on my mobile from numbers not known from the contacts list-if it's important they can send a text message instead.Always let the house phone ring to the answering machine then I can listen to any message they leave on that-if indeed they leave a message.

I go the other way, I try and keep them on the phone for as long as possible. I've even sat there telling them what I am doing with my computer for over 30 minutes, my computer wasn't even on. I play stupid and drag everything out for as long as possible.

Why? Well they could be ringing a relative of mine, a friend etc; The longer I can waste their time, the less time they have to harass people who will fall for this.

You presume that the only reason to call you is to sell you something.

They could potentially use your phone line for their own ends whilst it is connected.

Also they could record every syllable and use your voice to use it for other purposes.

What they're selling isn't always obvious, in which case, you/your data is the product.

Best ignored.

I found if they dont get a responce with the 1st call they try again but the last 2/3 digits change.

The biggest probem we face is number spoofing, in the worst cases of fraud; ppl are cruely tricked into loosing large sums of money because the number calling is recognised as their bank etc  >:(
