Cam sprockets are unbolted and have the chain on, tension is removed from the tensioner and the sprockets sit in a casting on the timing cover, head slides out and up (having disconnected the inlet, exhaust, water outlet, a few water pumps bolts, and some timing cover bolts.

On re-fit, crank t 90degrees before TDC (all pistons to the half way), head on, set the cams and lock them, bring the pistons to TDC and and lock the crank. Cam sprockets bolted on, tensioner released and tighten the bolts.  :y

Thanks for the explanation!  :y

I reckon Robsey's V8 "Omega 2.5 estate" was pretty much perfect. Before he gave the game away by poking a blower through the bonnet!

Was this the one with Monaro running gear?

That's why I am building my 51 Austin Countryman with all the Omega running gear, looks stock but far from it.

I bet that will go well when you're finished  >:D

About 200bhp/tonne?

(head gasket on these is done without removing the chain assembly and timing cover).

I really can't picture how this is done.  :-\

How do you remove the head and cams without taking the cam sprockets with it?

Sorry Nick, Don’t think they were ever respectable 😁 on the other hand the Morris Marina …….🤣🤣

The woeful Marina was laughably seen as 'the future' when introduced in 1971......despite the antiquated engineering coming straight from the mid 1950's. :D ;D

For a long time now I've had a hankering for a morris traveller with a V6, Vauxhall or jag as a bit of a runabout, would make an amusing sleeper.

Every time you post pictures of a car on your grounds, that garage looks nearer and nearer to collapse  ;D.

Nice motor, although I have to say neither the exterior not interior colour scheme do anything for me.

Will you be putting a few shekles their way? The buy in is surely pocket change to a man of means such as yourself...

Once the plane landed in Barbados he was met by local police led of the plane in handcuffs & that was his holiday over before it started, I find it hard to comprehend what goes on in some peoples heads. Hopefully he will receive a hefty fine & a ban from using the airline involved again.

Without making any excuse for the moron in question...

In day-to-day life the no smoking rules in the UK tend not to be taken in any way seriously. For example, I think every NHS hospital has been no smoking for around a decade now, including the carparks, grounds etc. Visit any one and you will surely see a cluster of smokers outside every door, both staff and patients and nothing is done to stop them.  ::)

Your common-or-garden moron therefore becomes used to smoking where they want and simply being rude to or shrugging off anyone who suggests they shouldn't be doing it. So put them in an environment where there are real consequences to their actions and they just aren't smart enough to see them coming.

I currently have a 1.6 zafira B for sale with excellent history for £1400, so make sure they aren't overpaying! I've owned mine for the past 3yrs/30ish k. My experience is they're cheap to run and insure, not uncomfortable but yes, pretty slow. They have a few common issues that are relatively easily fixed, but can be costly if you pay a garage.

Definitely a B btw, the early C's got the 1.8 Z18XER but not the 1.6. as tunnie says, 1.6T was much later and a different beast entirely.

As for rear space, with all 7 up, the only way for a buggy is to stand it vertical and put a Bungie round the rear most headrests to hold it up. Even then it won't do a double buggy, no way.

We did all our traveling in 2/3/1 formation which left plenty of space.

I keep all the receipts for my cars ..... don't add them up though.  ;D

Probably for the best! I don't make a habit of it, I choose not to think about what 8 months of Discovery 5 ownership cost me  :o

Less than three hundred quid a year/10,000 miles sounds OK to me.  :y

Fair point, especially considering there were some chunky items in there (clutch and timing belt). I wouldn't want to know what it would cost to have it all done at a garage  :-X

« on: 24 March 2024, 22:44:20 »
In the course of writing the ad for the Zafira, I discovered that I've spent just shy of £875 in maintenance costs (ex. MOT fees) over the past three years and 31,000. I can't make my mind up if that sounds like a lot or not, in the grand scheme of things.  :-\

Considering I've worked the car hard over that time, with lots of travel 6 or 7 up, lots of miles towing a trailer etc I suppose its not too bad.

Anyone else know what they've spent, or am I the only one who's this sad  :-\

Just a thought,.have you got a diagnostic that could read the pressure at the fuel rail? That might tell you more...

But not sure if thats reasonably possible ?

Tbh without some equipment to bench test it (and a spec sheet to test it against) I'm not sure how you would. Assuming it is the problem it clearly it still work partially, but all the tests I can think of (flow rate etc) involve knowing what good looks like. Hard without another one on hand  :-\.

Do you have any other fuel pump you could use to rig up as a temporary to test the car with?

Ok, fwiw I think you should look at the lift pump.

I'll bet cylinder 3 is the last on the rail, so any fuel supply deficiency will manifest there as cylinders 1 and 2 take the available fuel first.

As the fuel level drops, the lift pump has to work harder to suck the fuel out so that's when any weaknesses will show. Tbh I think the old fuel is a red herring, it would have mixed when you fill the tank and by driving around so I don't see why it would wait until there's only a 1/4 tank left before it shows an issue.

Built the zafira back up after replacing the cam dephasers and she's once again back to her quiet old self  :y

Time to get the advert written!
Do you think it might work on the wife?

Not for the £75 the zafira cost me I'm certain!
