Yet another problem! (Fuel leak)
« on: 21 April 2011, 16:45:03 »

And the hits just keep on coming at the moment.  Just filled the car up, 2nd time i've put a good amount of fuel in it since i've had it.

Thought it took a bit more than I expected, then saw that it was pooring fuel out the back from above the fuel tank.  You can see where the fuel was coming from in the pic (discoloured area by the tank strap).

I am assuming it is a seal or something that has gone where the filler pipe goes into the tank, stopped leaking after a minute and tank showing full, thinking it threw out extra fuel as I kept filling and then dumped any excess left in the pipe.

Thoughts and ideas more than welcome?  Do I have to drop the tank to get to it?

Thanks

dropping the tank is straight forward, I've done it before, its easier though with a second pair of hands as its bulky.

I'd drop the tank so you can see above it and whats what. Possible its letting in air somwhere, which would cause the feed back pressure click off on the pump to not work?

I suspected dropping the tank would be the likely course of action for diagnosis.  However, that will have to wait as it is full at the moment and I am not Arnold Schwarzeneggar  :D

The feedback clickoff on the pump did kick in, I was just topping off to the next nearest £ as I always do when someone pointed out that my mig was emptying it bladder on the forecourt.

If you roll back the boot carpet, you'll find a circular
access panel that you can easily remove.
This will allow you to see the top of the tank. It may
just be the fuel pump cover plate loose, or a
perished seal.

I was wondering if there was access from the boot, is that for a saloon, estate or both?  Mine is an estate.  Im going to be doing some bits on it tomorrow anyway, so will take a look.

The UK saloon has the access panel. Don't know if the
estate is different.
I don't think the US Catera version has the panel,
according to feedback from our cousins from across
the pond.

Just had a quick look, there is an easily accessible access plate just to the right of the spare tyre, had a look but think that is just access to the fuel pump, can't really see much in there.

If I take all the carpetting out the back, it looks like there may be two smaller plates in there.  No idea what they are and are pretty small but again, will have a more detailed look in the morning.

Thanks for all the input so far  :)
