General Discussion Area / Re: Public sector pay cap.
« on: 03 July 2017, 10:14:55 »
Something else to have an argument about.  ;D
A lot of talk over the weekend from various people (mostly Tories) that it should now be lifted. So what do we think ?
I work in the public sector and the simple fact is we can not afford to go beyond 1%. Pay rises are not funded from central government but have to come from efficiency savings, which would mean less jobs and a poorer service. The time to hand out rises is when we have actually balanced the budget and started paying back our debt so that they can be funded.

We went all electric with a pair of Leaf's and much as I thought we would still use the Omega's so far the only time has been when I needed a tow bar so I suspect their days are numbered.

General Car Chat / Re: Energy storage
« on: 28 June 2017, 17:03:07 »
Been trying restore some life into a "new" but stood for a while leisure battery.

While on the tinternet doing a bit of light reading, did you know the lead acid battery was invented way back in 1859!

Has no one honestly not came up yet with a new method of energy storage thats small , lightweight and compact?

Yes but not for a better price, yet...

Only test on a diesel car is an absolutely fickin brutal smoke test. Most diesels don't get to 4000rpm in daily driving, then the MOT man tries to kill your car.

Your going t wrong MOT station if they rev it that hard.....I know they should tho'

My MOT garage just gives a quick blip on the throttle and leaves it at that  :y
I thought the test was all system monitored now?
Damn well ought to be. If it can't be held at 4,000 RPM for a few seconds without dying, then better it dies there and then than carry on chucking out soot and unburnt fuel. :y

Nope...MOT blokey can click on various messages disregarding messages about engine/exhaust temp....and then just let it idle after a quick blip on the throttle when it does the smoke test.....or did when mine was last tested  ;)

I can see the point about soot Kevin, but a petrol can chuck out unburnt fuel as well .... whats the difference between diesel and petrol unburnt fuel I don't know....  :-\

If it does it will fair the emissions test, that is the difference.

Omega General Help / Re: Demist winter
« on: 16 June 2017, 21:52:06 »
the two omegas i have had work ok without aircon for demisting.  both had ac but remember some migs don't have as standard.

only exception is if is cold and raining and/or a car full of people then  misting can be a problem sometimes.   air con fixes it pretty instantly but i am slightly loath to use it as once its been switched on you have to leave it on or the cars mists up twice as bad as the air con sheds the moisture it has trapped.

if you use anti-mist wipes, keep the rear vents clear and the pollen filter dry it is ok most of the time.
Emphasis on most...

The Omega was repeatedly berated for having a poor ventilation system by reviewers of the time. This isn't news.

It's adequate when all working including the air conditioning I would say - mind you I have been amazed how much better the system in the Leaf is even though it's battery powered.

Observing some of the comments on this forum, mine mists up terribly in the winter. If the climate isn't working, as it is not one mine, for demist. Is this a common problem with the Omega?

The ventilation and demist system on the Omega only works if the aircon is working in my opinion. Fixed it on my 3 as none worked when purchased and then you can just leave it in auto, see where your going and be comfortable at all times.

Omega General Help / Re: Kwik-Fit lifetime brake guarantee.
« on: 16 June 2017, 14:01:14 »
Has anyone had experience of this guarantee?
My brakes were OK at MOT time, but probably need new pads by now and as they were replaced ages ago (I don't do many miles nowadays, after retiring!) I'm hoping that they will still honour the guarantee - or will I be better off going to the OOF hero, Serek?

Ron.

Years ago on my Audi A6 I went back for new pad under the guarantee - sorry mate you need new discs and they are not covered. I said really, show me - looked fine to me. Then took it to a Audi main dealer who did me a nice letter saying the discs did not need to be changed. Back to KF and they said well we think they do and we are not changing the pads unless you pay for them.

So useless in my opinion - don't think I've been in a KF since.

You make it sound easy, think it took me 10 minutes to get the corners off the dealer ones with my hack saw!

Based on that though I will see if I can make a copy of one during the week just for interest.  :y

Plates are part no. 9195961 94 x 35 x 2mm mild steel with holes and slot; screws are part no. 1315557 23mm x 5 large female torx head; you will need 2 of each to repair a door. They were very cheap, hardly worth making your own. You will need to cut the corners off one plate to manoeuvre it into the door. Pic follows.

Even if my local parts department had them in stock, I could make two in less time than it would take to drive and collect them.

That's is a great skill to have - I couldn't :-(

Welcome, Bournemouth her  :y

74
Are the reinforcements plates roughly 5mm thick each? If so I'll make some as I'm sure we've got some thicker metal knocking around  :y

And some shaved down cam cap bolts  as I have shite loads of them  :y assuming they're same thread of course

If it make any difference to your thought process the kits is readily available form VX and cheap.

Hi guys.

Passenger front door. Opening door and I get large cracking sound. I've had this before and I swapped out the bushings and still no difference. It's definitely coming from the other end of the strap (i.e. Inside the door).

Does one replace the strap and all good? Is it a door card off job? Any info you could give me would be great as I've never removed one before  :y

It is likely that the welds on the door end have failed, there is a repair kit you can get from VX which I have used successfully on mine.
