Timing Belt very loose or slack
« on: 14 December 2012, 11:50:53 »

Hello dear members, Yesterday I managed to change the water pump, tensioner, and all staff there. But for some reasons the timing belt is loose or slack. I tried to adjust the tensioner but nothing seems to be working. The belt in question has no marks. Tried to fit the old belt it does the same. Before I removed the old belt, I aligned the cam marks with camshaft cover and crankshaft pulley with arrow on the block. Anything I’m missing? Please help. :-\

I think you have the V6 engine ?? If so, are you using the PROPER Timing tools ?? If you do NOT use these there is no way you'll ever get the timing correct.

The correct procedure must be followed as well, if not it will never work.

Firstly what engine is it? Assuming, as you haven't mentioned a locking kit, that it's a 2.0 or 2.2 :-\

If a V6, do nothing else without a locking kit... You will never get the timing right using just the marks ;)

Afraid I can't be a huge help with the 4 pots without seeing it as I can't remember the exact setup :-[

Are you changing the whole timing belt kit?

Is the lug on the rear of the cambelt tensioner fully engaged in the block recess?

Hi sir, the tensioner seems to be in place, there is a small hook behind the tensioner and it has gone in the glove in the block. I've changed the tensioner, water pump, and idler, the belt has done only 2000 miles. the pump is gone so I bought a new one and  I've change the tenssiner and idler because they were just laying in the house. The other thing is when I start fitting the belt from left to right facing the vehicle, the belt become very slack, but other way round too tight to fit it. Thanks sir.

Yep, the water pump needs to be in the correct position or you can't tension the belt as the shaft is off centre (a legacy of the block design from the older 8V days)

I'm not sure if this will help or not, or even if you already have this information, but here it is anyway. I hope it is of some use Gibby :)

Hello hon Serek, I tried to match the pump mark with one on the back of the timing cover. Could it be because the pump is off market one? not sure but I will try again tomorrow Thanks for your response.

gibby, sorry I cannot post larger images but you can make them bigger by adjusting the zoom on your computer screen. Look at the top of the screen for the word  'Page' with a black downward pointing arrow, left click on it & a menu appears, look for 'Zoom' and place your cursor over it then follow the prompts. :y

On my computer holding down 'Ctrl' whilst pressing '+' or '-' adjusts the page size...
