Engine squeal
« on: 04 June 2013, 11:08:51 »

My 3.2 has a slight squealing sound when idling, it's a rotating squeal like a pulley or the like. Anyone had this before, don't imagine it's serious just wondering

Sounds like a belt slipping?

Yep, slipping belt or aux belt tensioner bearing would be my guess. Outside chance it's the air con compressor clutch. Could also be cam belt related, so worth getting to the bottom of it.

Remove the aux belt and give it a quick run to see if the noise is still there. While you're there check the tensioner pulley for play and roughness (and the rest of the ancillaries if it's OK).

The belt feels ok, so maybe a tensioner. I'll try it with the belt off and try it with the aircon on/off. Don't think it's cambelt related, it was done at one of the cambelt meets 2 years & 17k ago. It's Joff's estate I now own :y

Hey bud does it sound like this ? If so it turned out to be the tensioner/pulley making the sound new parts fitted nice and quiet again  :y good luck  ;)

No mate it's not like that, it is more like a squealing sound, seems to be more evident after I give it a wee 'boost'. Doesn't seem to be there constantly though which is weird. Anyway YouTube is a good idea, I'll film it when it next does it

Yep mine does it, but only when cold.

Replaced;
Belt. New one made it worse.
Idler pulley for new
Pas pump for a known good one
Alternator for a recon one
...all as for separate issues but no change.

Ac works fine. Re gassed. Clutch spins freely. No excess drag when ac on.

Water pump is still the original. But no play on the bearing and it spins smoothly.

So... Does that leave a week tensioner perhaps? :-\

I went out and filmed it there and it's not doing it but I did spray the belt last night with a conditioner spray to see if it was just a dry belt maybe, just don't think for a minute it would be that easy ;D

Aye new belt makes it worse which makes me wonder if the tensioner is working at its best  :-\, I have a small issue when say returning home after a journey short as 8 miles there is a noise coming from the tensioner area but next day engine cold no noise just when the engine is hot after a run, not a loud noise just noticeable. Got a tensioner to fit when i have time hopefully that will cure it for good...

Omegas they are a pain in the behind pretty much constantly but we keep fixing them  ;D :y
