Victim of overtightening
« on: 11 March 2010, 16:21:23 »

Did an oil change today for the first time since I had the car. Give you 3 guesses what was tightened so hard I couldn't even turn it, never mind get the cap off  :(

Had to do the oil change without a filter this time, I think I'l have to get a hefty breaker bar on it if I'm to shift the bloody thing, and a very strong filter wrench.

Any tips on how to do this without damaging it?

from earlier posts iirc you need a strap wrench to hold filter body while undoing the nut/bolt

I was pushing the ratchet with my foot with all my strength while I held onto a wishbone, I didn't even budge it

Yep, gonna have to waste the 5 litres of oil I put in today when I do actually work out how to get it off...

Won't all the oil come out through the filter housing though? I was gonna drain it again tbh, rather catch it than have it all over my face  ;D

no most of the oil is in the sump you will only get what in the filter housing leak out besides if its so tight you might be able to duck out the way before any oil seeps out :y

Paper cartridge filters appear to be designed so that it dribbles down your sleeve, whatever angle you try to attack it from.

I think the OOF shop should start stocking overalls with an oil extractor built into the RH sleeve. ;D

If its on that tight I'm surprised it didn't start undoing from the block, and my mind is saying you should be pulling the handle to undo it ... undoes anticlockwise .....  but as I wasn't watching where you were lying I could be doing you an injustice ...  :)

Good call Mr Entwood, as I have done that many times, but I triple checked and I was definitely turning the right way...
...unless it's a left handed thread of course...

No it's not.  ;)
How about giving your spanner a clout too, instead of just heaving on it.
