How about giving your spanner a clout too, instead of just heaving on it.

I tried that, just kept slipping off, I was scared of rounding the housing off

I know some will not agree with the practice I adopt on these things, but I jack the car up well and get a 3/8ths socket wrench into the nut shaped end and clobber it with a rubber mallet.  Never (God that is tempting fate!!! ::) ::)) sheared the cannistor off yet, just unscrewed the lid successfully!

If you have nothing to lose, try it! :D :D ;)

More likely to shatter the ratchet gears than anything else TBH. For undoing it the first time I would recommend getting a spanner over the nut and work it free... Once you've done it and tightened it correctly yourself you'll find you can use a ratchet in the end and undo it pretty easily :y :y

I think it needs a snug fitting spanner and a thwack with a mallet to break the seal ...  :)

The trouble is Entwood is that I have found the size of that nut is between about 20mm-21mm (or is it 21mm-22mm?)!  Anyway you need a half size between those for it to fit snuggly.  But the 3/8ths socket rachet fits perfectically inside that 'nut' ;) ;)

I didn't try a spanner, come to think of it, it would fit better than the ratchet and socket that I was using. If that fails I'll try Lizzie's suggestion with a breaker bar.

Socket wasn't a great fit though, seemed like it was a 23 1/2 mm nut rather than 24

Done an oil and filter change today myself on the father in laws focus tdi,and that was also a barstool to get the filter off.Take it some idiot in the garage overtightened it last time.Ended up putting a screwdriver through it in the end with oil everywhere. >:(

Is it possible to get an impact wrench on it. Not alot of space to do anything.

Both the cap and housing are aluminium so they will expand at the same rate so it probably won't make much difference :( that said I always do oil & filter changes hot and I didn't have any trouble getting the cap off mine last weekend (with an 18" breaker bar and and a 24mm socket).

I don't know if it would be possible to warm the housing with a kettle full of boiling water without warming the cap :-/

What about trying a hexagon (as opposed to bi-hexagon) type socket?

I had a 23mm hex impact socket, which wouldn't go on, and a normal 24mm socket, which seemed slightly loose. Might see if I can get the 24mm hex one  :y

With a name like cool rather than heating the body, with the oil hot try cooling the cap. Can you get CO2 aerosols anywhere or the footballers spray. an ice pack
