Omega General Help / Re: Issue with timing belt marks
« on: 18 April 2023, 22:07:00 »
I've always gone clockwise on all setups. Has always worked for me - just have to fit the lower right idler last.

My preferred technique is to start at crank - run up to tensioner (leaving what looks like a tooth too much slack, but it actually itsn't) route over cams 1-2, through the middle idler, again not keeping it too tight, and then routing across 3-4. I then find you can slot the lower idler in at a slight angle, straighten it up and then insert the bolt :y

No worries at all :) You'll get it spot on, I'm sure.

Usually when I fit a V6 cambelt kit, I get it almost spot on by the first spin, sometimes needing just a couple of minor fractional corrections. But, fitting my own (on the project) last week, I ended up making small adjustments and rotating the engine about 8 times until I was truly happy with it.

No shame in that. Because you know when it's done, that it's set up ab-so-lutely cock-on :y :y

It's a while since I did one but if there's a rotation mark on the belt, that's the way it needs to go.

If you meant which way do you route the belt, then the later non-adjustable lower roller is done anti-clockwise, and the adjustable clockwise.

Yeah I totally forgot since last time I done it, conventionally on any other belt I've done you always run all the slack to the tensioner, but that was on single cam engines. I'll need to dig out the cambelt DVD for refresher!

If you get really stuck, I'll fly up to you. I'm off work for a while. I do have another cambelt  I've promised to do first, but, if you're stuck without a car I'm sure there can be some negotiation :y

When I say rotate - I mean a couple of mm to help the belt sit, nothing more ….

Looks like perhaps a tad too much slack between cams 3 and 4. You can, with the locking tool in place, gently rotate the pulleys using a t50 socket (or sometimes by hand) to get the marks sat right.

I don’t personally use the timing marks on the belt - just the setting kit :y

Hi Derek, long time no speak.

From a stone cold engine first thing in the morning - (ignition on but engine off) what is the coolant temp sensor reading? Does it match the ambient temperature outside?

You can watch the temperature of it increase in live data and see if it remains consistent with engine temperature - this will show you if the sensor is working as expected without having to swap it out through guesswork.

On the live data, does it confirm the lambda system is in closed loop once the engine is warm?

Is the engine actually getting up to temperature - thermostat not stuck open?

Well, it has to be one of those three things.

But it’s not :-(

We fitted a replacement loom today

Tried swapping b1 and b2 sensors and the fault doesn’t move

Then we fitted the a different ECU

Despite this - the second the car is started - it logs “open circuit” fault code for the lambda heater on B2 S1

I hate to say it but I’m short of ideas ….

General Car Chat / Re: L322 Rangie Problem
« on: 03 April 2023, 16:35:11 »
As a possible factor - I changed the NSF wheel the day before this happened, but didn't go anywhere near the ABS sensor or it's cable. I will, of course, visually inspect it.

I did think it sounds like an ABS sensor issue - but I know they are also prone to ABS ECU failure too.

Thankfully, it's much easier to get at, than the Omega ones!

General Car Chat / L322 Rangie Problem
« on: 03 April 2023, 16:33:42 »
My Trusty 2002, 4.4 V8 Petrol Rangie, of the L322 variety.

Last week or the week before, I lent it to the good lady for 24 hours while I did a job on her car.

She sent me a message from work, saying "It's doing it's naughty dashboard thing again". (I've never seen it do anything odd).

Anyway, I had a look when she got back. There are no dash lights at all when turning the key, not the usual handbrake light, engine light - nothing illuminates. The petrol and temp gauges don't move.

When the car starts, a single ABS light comes on the dash.

I've also noticed the power steering is much heavier at slower speeds. It's still assisted, but I think it's lost it's servotronics.

I have kit that will read the various ECU's on this car, so I will try and connect to them and see what it's saying. Can't do it for a few days though, as I left it at my Uncles house when working on his car  :(

I should add, in addition to the speedo, it's not logging any miles at all

I fear I am not long for this world. Two days ago, I woke up with a sore throat. Yesterday, sore throat, aching, tired and lethargic.

Today, my nose is streaming like a tap and burning up, I feel like there's a concrete block on my head, my eyes are running, I've lost a lot of my appetite, and I am as grumpy as %$&^.

I made myself a hot-toddy at midday, by mixing the juice of half a lemon, a generous dollop of honey, a glug of whiskey and some boiling water.

It was lovely while it lasted and soothed my throat and nose, but I can't keep drinking them one after the other. Can I?  ::)

I think I'm going to bed  >:( :-[
