I have cloth heated seats in my Desmond 2003 are the back of the seat and the seat both heated?
-
Switch them on and see ;D

The back seats have their own switch near cig lighter. Ones in my 3.2 (be it leather) still work front and back :y

Is the whole of the front seats heated or just the base part you site on?
-
Both seat base and seat back will heat up if they still work properly.
I,m often surprise how quickly mine heat up in both the front and back.On average heat starts within few minutes and and being controlled by thermostat give a gentle warmth on setting 1 to really quite hot on 5 even on leather.
Great for cool mornings or when you back is a tad tired :)

Ah. Sorry miss read. On mine I tend to notice base only, as I usually switch it off after few mins.

That's the same on both front ones on mine. Maybe the back part of the heating element goes first.

Has anyone ever replaced the foam in the seat?
The foam in the drivers cloth seat has gone flat and hard on the back and seat part and has lost all its bounce and comfort. All the replacements I have seen on the Bay all look in a similar state. :(

Can't say for the face lift car with it's multi-stage heating, but on earlier cars, the elements were wired in series such that if one mat failed, then you lost heating from both.

Buy a passenger seat in the same fabric and swap the foams etc over :y
It's a fiddly job, but the results speak for themselves :y

The actual seat bases are the same, just attach your driver's back to a passenger base. That got my heated seat working about 6 years after I bought the car. It also helps that the passenger foam won't be as badly worn; I now sit about 20mm higher in the car than I did before, and can't feel the base through the upholstery.
It's a shame you can't swap the seatback upholstery as well, but the features are handed and would look very odd.

I never realised that the seat backs were heated as well as the bases, but then I've only turned mine on the once[for a couple of minutes] to see out of curiosity if they worked and only felt at the bases of the front and rear seats.
