Where is the leak!!
« on: 25 December 2006, 17:34:36 »

Coolant loss getting worse, about 1 litre per 100 miles being lost now.

The only signs I can see, are drips from the passenger side of the bellhousing, so I'm sure this is the problem.

However, it's NOT the HBV.

Any other suggestions of why coolant could be disappearing into this area?

Cheers
James

Any of those pipes around the back of the engine, the gasket to the block, even that small pipe that goes around the passenger side of the engine to heat the throttle bodies, coolant bridge. About the only things it's not likely to be are the thermostat housing and pipe since they are at the front.

I think you need to remove the scuttle then run the engine to hot and have a look/feel.

Possibly the oil cooler plate but I very much doubt it it's the actual oil cooler. That won't leak down the bell housing and the oil pressure simply forces oil into the coolant. I think you will need to take the plenum, manifold and manifold bridge off to see one there. If it comes down to that run the engine until hot first so that you stand a chance of seeing the leak.

Your best bet may well be to top it up while cold and then run it until it gets hot with the scuttle off. It will then be under pressure and you may be able to see or feel a spray. It could be from any of the pipes at the back of the engine, they have been known to split. If it is a split pipe it's still not much of a split and it may need to be under pressure for you to see it, a litre every 100 miles is tiny compared to a hose falling off.

Right, just had the scuttle off, after going for a run. I could still see coolant on the passenger side of the bellhousing, however there were no leaks to be seen up above. The HBV was bone dry, as were all of the connecting hoses.

Looks like it's going to be a plenum off job at the weekend for more investigation.

Ah, I can't complain, I've had thousands of miles already trouble free from a £400 omega....

I'm sure it'll only be something simple anyway.. just a pain to get to!!

Cheers Mark, I'll do this at the weekend, and get some new bridge seals.

Are there any specific parts/sealants I need for this job?
