Rear brakes?
« on: 12 August 2016, 20:05:48 »

I am needing to overhaul the rear brakes on my 3.2 saloon with the vented rear discs. Does anyone know of anywhere that sells all the parts? I'm needing discs, pads, pins and springs. While I have it apart is worth doing the shoes as well?

I would, they're probably original and near the end of their life. Mine didn't survive removal of the disc, which meant another trip to the factors for replacements. Now, I would spend the £20 up front, as I hate interrupted jobs.

It's just the pins and springs that are only available from Vauxhall, everything else can be sourced from all the usual places.

Thanks Nick, I've seen the discs and pads in various places. Good to know about the pins as that was the struggle. Would there be any merit in changing the callipers in order to fit solid discs?

Seems a bit drastic for four 6x80mm pins :o

There is method in my madness! The callipers look quite worn, so my thinking is get a pair of callipers for solid discs, clean and refurbish them, then replace the callipers on the car. There is also much greater choice in the solid discs and fitting kits.

Are the vented ones not required due to the way the TC uses the rear brakes on those cars? Depends how you drive I guess....

That's a lot of parts and buggering about just to paint a pair of calipers you already own. Have you been eating cheese before you go bed?

Fair enough I'll look into the pins and springs from Vx, would you happen to know the part numbers by chance?

The springs on the car are shot, 80 quid for two small bits of metal!!! I can get two callipers for 30 and a fitting kit for 7 quid. The other option I have read about is to replace the pins with split pins, it's the springs that are the problem!

I'd be happy to make a pin that will work. But considering that many members here won't see beyond Vx branded oil or find having to use shorter bolts problematic, I suspect there will be too much whinging to justify a batch that don't exactly replicate original ones.

And as I've said every time this subject comes up; the pins are easy, it's the springs that require some ingenuity.
