Worked out im getting only 17mpg around town when driving like a granny on a sunday.Obviously a problem somewhere.

Have cleaned all breather pipes,icv,throttle body,changed plugs and leads.Drives fine and doesnt smoke/smell etc.No loss of water or oil.

Im a bit stumped.Any ideas?

Replace airfilter for a starter, then go for fuel filter.  Basically, give it a darn good service.  Would also consider a blast of decent fuel (v-power or similar) to get the injectors clean.  Get the timing rechecked to ensure its all spot on.

Service and clean the brakes, including the handbrake.  A sticking pad or three does nothing for consumption figures either....

Check tyre pressures and check them for wear/poor tracking, knacked bushes etc.

Air filter is new and clean
Tyre pressures fine,and all tyres in good condition.


Are there any photos on this site of the 2.0 engine bay...Not familiar with engine layout and exactly where everything is.

What are your tyres set to? Might be worth upping them a bit. Also, use a decent pressure gauge - don't trust the new automatic machines to be dead accurate.

My previous 2.0 Auto returned a similar consumption figure on local jaunts too. And this was a really well-maintained car.

However, what temperature is it running at around the town?
If it's running cold, then this isn't helping matters.

Sorry to butt in, but my mates 2.0l auto also gave really poor mpg on urban driving and his was regularly serviced too. Dare say the guys on here will be able to come up with some ideas to improve your fuel economy, but is it also a problem particular to this engine?

It all comes down to power to weight ratios really.

The 2.0 litre is a tad underpowered really, so the engine is working harder. Saying that, I successfully towed a 1500 kg caravan with mine, and generally achieved 22-23 mpg - not bad really!
However, give the 2.0 litre a good steady motorway cruise, (without the 'van in tow), and it went flying up to around 35 mpg.
