Title: Battery charging
Post by: devonian on 14 December 2007, 20:54:21
Ok, maybe bit of a stupid question, but as I dont know the answer then I dont consider it too daft to ask...

My car has been laid up in the garage for one thing and another and the battery is flat. Can I disconnect the battery to remove it and charge it, without the alarm going off?? Or will this cause me problems??

Need to get car sorted so I can sell it on :)

not sure, due to current state of battery.

Normal rule to keep the alarm happy is to disconnect battery within 15 seconds of ignition being turned off.

maybe you could slow charge on the car to get enough power to satisfy that, then remove to charge properly

Alternatively, you could buy a 'memory saver' that has a 9V battery and plugs into the cigarette lighter, it keeps the alarm and radio code in check while the battery is taken away and  being charged.

But doesn't that require a lighter socket that is permanently live?

Yep. Omega's lighter socket is only live with ignition so that won't work.

TBH, if you're not going to belt charge into it I'd leave the car connected. A battery that's been allowed to go flat needs a gentle charge anyway, TBH. Give it 2 or 3 amps for 24 hours or so and, at that charge rate, you won't need to disconnect it.

This is exactly what I did earlier this week. Saved all the hassle of recoding everything after reconnecting the battery following the charge.

As Kevin says though, trickle charge only!!

Also, make sure that you connect the charger clips to the battery and then switch the charger on.

I bought one of these from Machine Mart

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/atc12v-car-battery-charger

max it charges at is 0.8 amps, this should not damage your alternator.

Nope... mine is a live with the ignition off. In fact I leave the SatNav to charge from the rear cigarette lighter (facelift model) when parked and push the thing under the passenger seat. This way it seems to the casual passer-by like I left a charger adapter cable plugged in.

The rear one on facelifts is on a timer MJ, it switches off after 15mins (to prevent you flatening the car battery) until you either turn ign on again or open a rear door.  :y
