What legal process?

The process to deport illegal imigrants/asylum seekers to Rwanda is an idea dreamt up by the Government. It has not been approved by Parliament. The legal process rules on laws which have been passed by parliament. Parliament is sovereign, not the Government.

So the Judicial Review will decide whether the Govt has the legal right to do what they are wanting to do. If they don't then they can't. The Government is subject to all the laws that Parliament has passed, and the Govt can't change those laws without the approval of Parliament.

Omega General Help / Re: Barn find starts but then stops
« on: 16 June 2022, 16:14:43 »
Now to demonstrate my real level of ignorance in public.... I bought a fuel pressure gauge - but for the life of me, I can't find the Schrader valve to connect it to. Most of the fuel injection system seems hidden under covers - and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to remove... sorry ;-)

There is a schrader valve on the injector rail underneath the plenium. You will need to remove the plenium to get at it though - which basically means you can't run the engine and measure the fuel pressure at the same time. However, the fuel pressure will be a maximum when the engine isn't running, so bridge the fuel pump relay with a paper clip, and monitor the pressure. I suspect it should be 3bar above atmospheric - or 4 bar absolute. Then suck on the small pipe to the fuel pressure regulator (or use a MityVac if you've got one). The fuel pressure should drop, but should not go below 3 bar however hard you suck.

I may be wrong, but your readings don't suggest air flow meter to me. With 2% engine load the ECU is reporting 3.25 g/s. With 9.4% engine load it's 13.25 g/s. That's not far off 5 times for both figures, which suggests the MAF is behaving.

Some government ministers are saying the 'European advice' is advisory only, and the UK can disregard it if we choose to....which we should.

Not sure how true this is.

The whole episode is a complete clusterf*uck. :-X

AIUI ECtHR rulings aren't themselves binding, and there is no enforcement or punishment.  However, parliament - the UK parliament - passed a law which incorporates the ECHR rulings into UK law - The Human Rights Act 1998 - https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/42/contents. So parliament has decided that the UK must abide by ECtHR rulings. Parliament could repeal or amend The HRA1998, but so far haven't dared.

Yes and there's a judicial review next month to decide whether the whole Rwanda policy is even legal or not.  ::)

I think we can guess what the unelected liberal judges will decide.  :-X

The Govt should have legislated, but even if they managed to get it through the Commons, they'd have to contend with the unelected LimpDem/Liebour dominated Lords.  :-\

And AIUI that's the point of the ECtHR ruling - these deportations shouldn't happen until all legal process has been exhausted. If the Judicial review rules that the policy is unlawful, then the deportations won't happen. If it rules they are lawful then that impediment will fall away.

I don't believe for one minute that the Govt thought they'd get away with this policy without it being challenged in the courts. The timing is strange though - it's almost as if there was some important by-election next week and the Govt are looking to stir up their supporters with faux outrage. ::)

Sounds like the passenger load factors on HMG's new Boscombe Down (Ryanair would call it "Stonehenge East" or "Sailsbury North") to Kigali route may be lower than they expected/hoped. I wonder if I/you could get a cheap flight to help them fill the seats.

Omega General Help / Re: what size allen key
« on: 15 June 2022, 14:08:43 »
It'll be either 7, 8 or 10mm. If you crawl under the car with a 7mm, it'll be 8mm. If you crawl under with an 8mm it'll either be a 7mm or a 10mm. Murphey's law applies.

If I were you, I'd get something like this : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253418130398?hash=item3b00e5cbde:g:mogAAOSwnipWVXdJ

That includes both long and short allen keys. It also includes the Torx and XYZ bits which crop up all over the place. You'll need the XYZ bits to get the brake backing plate off.

The Torx bits are handy when you round off an allen headed bolt. You can then insert* the next size up Torx bit to get it undone.

If you just want the Allen/Hex bits, then this is a bit cheaper : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114836389351

Both sets are cheap and cheerful, and made of cheese, but they'll do the job a few times before they fail.

Insert*: Belt the B'jesus out of it into the (slightly too small hole) with the biggest hammer you can physically find. If that doesn't work, angle grinder is next. Resist any temptation to try "Easyouts". They will break off and leave you bu99ered.

« on: 08 June 2022, 12:43:56 »
Got stung for £1.80 per litre for E10 petrol last Thursday. Was running on fumes on the way home from Lincolnshire/Norfolk and decided to stop at the Morrisons in Wincanton rather than risk the remaining 15 miles to get home to Yeovil incase we had to get out and push. Foolishly thought that the Wincanton Morrisons price would be the same as the Yeovil Morrisons price. Did the pay at them pump thing, and it authorised up to £100 spend. That didn't fill the tank! Just over 55L into a 66L tank. Then when I got back to yeovil, it was 'only' £1.71 a litre. Shysters.

Thanks for the advice, I was a bit hesitant to start pulling the pipes around and making matters worse....will give it a try as how you've explained it seems pretty straightforward. :y

I had mine 'blow orf' at decidedly inconvenient times and places, dumping the coolant all over the road. Whether that was a symptom of, or the cause of the subsequent HG failure is open for discussion. It probably all started when I disconnected the hoses to flush and reverse flush the heater matrix with a hose pipe. Perhaps I somehow damaged the quick release fittings in doing so - either way I couldn't get the bu99ers to seal properly afterwards, so out came he hack saw, and they never 'popped orf' again.

308
Surely if it's one of the push release hose ends, how will a spring clip make a proper seal on the fixed part on the bulk head? My local garage said take the car away and come back when you have the parts, and as there are zero parts available the cars sort of not going to get fixed any time soon. :-\

The bulkhead part is just two ally pipes with a raised ridge about 5mm in from the end. You can hack saw off the quick release fittings on the rubber pipes, and slide them over the bulkhead pipes and secure with hose clamps. I know this to be true - I've done it on my car. There is enough length on both the rubber hoses to do away with the quick release (aka quick fail!) ends.

It'll be a bit more complicated if the curly whirly pigtail pipe down the back of the engine is damaged - not much room there to bodge up an alternative.

;D no, from tescos… every little helps :y

I'm getting pi55ed off with Tescos in Yeovil. Haven't had Dripping since lockdown, and now they haven't had any Lard for two weeks either. I'm down to my last half a block of Lard, so after this weekend I'll struggle to make any Roast Potatoes or Yorkshire puddings. I blame BREXIT. Or BoJo. Or Corona.
More importantly, we can't get roll mop herring...
Roll mop herring is a luxury item. Lard and Dripping are basic essentials. Completely different order of magnitude in seriousness. For a while they didn't have any Anchovy fillets. Shocker

Also the only curry sauce mix they had was Phal - which I panic bought and stocked up the cupboard with (obvs once I'd already panic bought 5 years worth of bog roll). Now they haven't got the Phal anymore - just Rogan Josh, Jally, Butter Chicken, Madras etc - all the southern softie no kick stuff. Thankfully Asda are still doing the Vindaloo.

And whilst I'm on a Tesco rant, bl00dy Clubcard. I refuse to buy anything that is cheaper with a Clubcard than without. Instead, I go to Asda who 99% of the time are price matching the Clubcard price. Reckon it's costing them £50 every 2 weeks (6 bottles of Rioja).

The trouble with the remoaners, is that they simply cannot accept that the people they claim to represent disagreed with them, and they are still sore that the electorate had the audacity to vote to leave the EU.

Brexit happened. Accept it and move on.
Yes, or f@ck off to an Eu country  :y
They can't. You're only allowed to stay in the EU for 90 days in any 180 now.
Unless you move there ;)

Which I believe was Raeturbos point...
For which you need a Long Stay Visa, and there is no garantee you'll get one.

I can't see Boris lasting to the next GE now. If 40% of his own MP's can't support him, then it's too easy for the opposition to claim that the British public shouldn't either. So the question is who, where and when the dagger will be plunged into his back. Two tricky byelections coming up, and less than 2 years till the next election. A new leader will want their feet under the table well before the next election. I reckon the 2019 red wall tories will start to panic about their own seats if Honiton goes pear shaped.

General Discussion Area / Re: Ukraine Odessa shipping
« on: 31 May 2022, 20:30:00 »
The Bosphorus is currently closed to all military shipping. AIUI it's some sort of international shipping 'right of way' and if Turkey closes it, it has to close it to everyone equally - though I don't know if that applies to Turkey itself. Therefore getting NATO military shipping into the Black Sea is currently impossible and if the straights were opened, then they would also have to be opened to Russian military shipping too which would allow Russia to replace the Moskva in the Black Sea - not something that would be in Ukrainian interests.

Omega General Help / Re: My Omega's Cats stolen

If it's any use, I've got 2 genuine Omega B downpipes complete with cats that I removed from my car 18 months ago. The flanges are rusted to bu99ery, but if you've got the tools you might be able to repair them, or somehow sleeve them into place.
