One of my pet hates.It happens to me almost daily on my work commute.I try and slow down/drop back until they are more than half way along the slip road.Then accelerate so I join just after them at an appropriate speed.Half the time I still end up stamping on the brakes because Ive caught them up before they have got on the A12 and then Im back to square one.
Some people shouldn't be allowed out in public without a responsible adult to escort them,never mind let loose in a car.
Ive always said there should be a separate test for motorway type driving,and those who aren't able to handle the speed and conditions properly shouldn't be allowed to use them.
A few months ago I joined the motorway just after one of the 30mph tards I had dropped back from on the slip road and he for some unkown reason hit the brakes hard.
There was a truck not too far behind me which was going much faster than him,and I was by this time too late to stop from hitting him up the arse (my own fault I suppose) so I had to swing into the the right hand lane which then caused the car which was just to occupy the same space to stand on his brakes to avoid me.
I looked to my left as I passed the erratic braker and he appeared to be at least 90 years old.

Utterly ridiculous. A danger to them selves and everyone else around. Assuming those lorries are doing 56 that car was barely doing 30 on the slip road.

Thing is if there's an accident, it'll be the vehicle moving fastest that will cop at least a portion of the blame.


The idea that " speed kills " now seems to give everyone else the idea they can do wtf they like and stuff everyone else, as they think they'll be blameless.

As said, there should be a test for motorway driving. No pass, no motorway.


Having said that, I believe there's no minimum speed limit in the uk...?

I've looked at the video four times now, and I can honestly say I can't see the problem 

If you look at the white van in front of the black car, and then the humongous lorry+trailer, they all appear to be travelling at the same sort of speeds whilst in the l/h lane.

maybe a little timid coming off the slip road onto the m/way, but I can't say it is ridiculously/unsafely slow.

maybe a little timid coming off the slip road onto the m/way, but I can't say it is ridiculously/unsafely slow.

Strongly suspect the driver of the black car, rather than keeping pace with the camper van and joining the motorway in front of the black lorry,  saw in its mirrors the black lorry with trailer and slowed down. There by causing the black lorry to move to lane two, and most likely causing the traffic behind the black lorry to brake or slow heavily to 56mph.

If the driver of the black car had been competent, both it and the camera car would have been up the road and all would be well. No lane changing lorry, no braking by oncoming cars to 56mph, etc.

If the lorry had not moved to lane two, I'm fairly sure we would have seen the black car stationary at the end of the slip road waiting for a gap in the traffic. Then joining the motorway from zero mph. 

At least, that's what I saw anyway.

OK  - I *think* I can see that. Still don't think it warrants such diatribes tho - I think we've all (I certainly have) had moments of uncertainty when joining a motorway. Better to hesitate, imho, than force your way out into a gap that is too small and too fast moving.

having said that...
I do think that compulsory motorway lessons are a good idea.
but how would that work? you can't go on the m/way until you have the lessons/pass the test - how can you have the lessons?

Re lessons, same way everyone passes a normal road test. With an instructor only, until passed. I guess...?

I hadn't noticed that. I was too busy thinking what on earth is the problem.


From rounding the bend I'd be looking to be in lane 2 of the slip road and join behind the red lorry. There by over taking the camper and black car leaving them to get on with it. No?

I wouldn't even attempt it.

This irritates me as well, although I spotted a gap at 11.23.23 where I would have shot across the chevrons straight in to lane two and outrun everyone else.
