Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Throttle position sensor
« on: 24 July 2010, 21:33:04 »
Hi all :)

Just a quick question: What is the reported max voltage from your TPS at wide open throttle? Either by direct measurement or tech2/"My Naff Code Reader".
I would think 5 volts should be max, but mine can't reach more than 4.4V (83%). I would just like a reference  ;)

Oh, forgot to mention that this is for Motronic M2.8.1 (X25XE/X30XE).

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Fault code 136 (M2.8.1)
« on: 28 May 2010, 19:15:38 »
Good evening folks!

Just to steer away from my topic in general about every annoying fault on my car I'm posting this specific question here.

On Motronic M2.8.1 I see the fault code 136 described as "Unknown driver output error" and a possible cause (according to Autodata) is "ECM internal short to positive".

Does anyone have a clue about what this is and why? I've been searching all over the internet, but I can't find a lot of useful info about the 2.8.1.

If a driver output (not sure if it's a discrete transistor/mosfet or a hybrid package) actually has a short to positive, could that be caused by an external connection? Maybe someone have schematics for the ECM?

Anyway, the dash light does not indicate an error, I only see it if I clip it and I can not reset it. It's there after a reset without starting the engine.

Thanks in advance folks, this place is really great for a poor Norwegian bloke like me  :)

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Coil-per-plug pinouts/data
« on: 08 June 2010, 11:08:15 »
Hi all,

I'm thinking about converting my Y26SE which currently have X25XE electronics to the standard Y26SE coil-per-plug system. I want to do this since I haven't changed rocker covers and my DIS-pack is acting up. Does anyone have a pinout for the connectors on the newer coils? Shouldn't be much of a problem connecting it to the ECU I already have, but without schematics for the coils it's a hard guess.

Thanks in advance  :)

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / DIS-pack modification
« on: 05 December 2009, 17:57:17 »
Hello all :)

With a reference to my thread about swapping X25XE to a Y26SE, http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1258771447, I'm thinking of leaving the standard X25XE DIS-pack and use the stock Y26SE coilpacks.

I don't see any huge problems doing this, but I'm looking for pinouts for the coilpacks on the Y26SE. My Haynes manual doesn't cover the facelift Omegas, so if anyone have any info I'd love to hear it  :)

I don't have the original connectors for the coils so I think I'll just solder wires to the pins and fill it with hot melt glue to seal it. Using these coils would save me the trouble with replacing cam covers and eventually faulty plug leads. I know I have to fire two and two cylinders in parrallel (waste spark like the DIS-pack), but still, I think it's an improvement.

Omega General Help / Driving without MAF
« on: 16 August 2010, 18:04:04 »
Hi all!

Seen several threads around where people have tried driving without the MAF connected. I tried this myself, just to see how it would respond, but I get quite different results from what I've read in mentioned threads.

- The engine won't idle for more than a couple of seconds, I have to use the pedal and keep it above 3k rpm or else it will stall.
- I have close to no power for driving and it shakes and fights me constantly.

My conclusion: No MAF = no run. Is this normal or is there something else that is very wrong? (M2.8.1 system)

Omega General Help / Plumbing the beast
« on: 20 May 2010, 18:36:28 »
Good evening all  :)

My Omega is finally on the road again, it sure took some time to get things done, but well worth it.

I have checked with the thread and pictures in http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152565204, but I have one question: The smaller hose that is molded onto the larger hose to the IAC, what should it be connected to? I think I have mixed up something hehe.. As it is now, it's connected to the rear multi-ram valve, which I think is wrong. Maybe it's for the fuel pressure regulator?

If anyone can clear this up I'd be pretty happy, the car lack some power..

Besides this, the X25XE to Y26SE conversion went without much trouble. I did not change the rocker covers (=exposed plug holes which filled up with water when the car sat for some weeks without the scuttle fitted).. A pain to drain :p

Omega General Help / Drivetrain slack
« on: 25 June 2010, 13:13:39 »
Hi all :)

The drivetrain on my miggy is feeling more and more "loose", there's a slack somewhere. Very annoying in heavy traffic and low gears. It has been like that as long as I've had it, but I really want to fix it now (before it gets a lot worse).
The gear stick moves a fair bit when you put on any load, but I think that's quite normal.

Anyone know exactly what part that usually fails? This is a manual, estate with LSD.

Omega General Help / Analyzing exhaust smell
« on: 10 July 2010, 17:15:55 »
Hi all,

This may sound like a daft question, but I wonder why my exhaust smells "weird".

I can describe it as a mixture of gunpowder and steamy hot clothes, at least after I've had a heavy right foot. The exhaust is really, really hot, but haven't seen any glowing cats yet, but I guess it's pretty close.

What should it smell like? It most certainly don't remind me of normal exhaust fumes. I think I might have semi-blocked cats..

Omega General Help / Still hesitating and gutless
« on: 01 July 2010, 00:16:06 »
Hi all,

I got my new parts today (thanks AutoVaux for shipping to Norway!). Had some time at the workshop and replaced DIS-pack, plug leads and spark plugs. My old spark plugs still looked brand new, but I changed them anyway.

It got rid of my misfire - at last, but the poor miggy is still gutless like a 2-litre. With reference to my previous thread, http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1274376988, I am pretty sure all vacuum hoses are connected as they should. At least the multiram works as it should. It struggles to reach about 4000 rpm and then "shoots off" (in comparison).

Does anyone have a clue about where to look next? It could be obvious, but I've become blind in the process..

Checklist (ruling out things):
- No fault codes (but the silly 136 remains when clipping. Zilch from "My Naff Code Reader").
- Fuel pressure up to standard
- HT-part is brand new
- Vacuum seems ok
- No obvious intake leaks

Omega General Help / Injector data
« on: 02 July 2010, 20:02:08 »
Hi all,

Does anyone have any data for the injectors on the V6 engines?

X25XE/X30XE:
Part no 30487344

Y26SE/Y32SE:
Part no 24406653

Some years ago I saw a spreadsheet showing all Bosch injectors, but I'm not able to find it anymore.

I'm thinking about fitting my X25XE injectors to the 2.6 (trying everything to fix my poor ride).

Omega General Help / Cambelt failure - no interference?
« on: 21 June 2010, 02:15:50 »
Hi all,

Just a quick question.. The old X25XE I have that packed in last year gave me a surprise tonight. I finally dismantled it and to my amazement, I haven't found one single damage on the heads/valves :o How could that be?

The belt was very worn after half a years service, long strings of belt was torn up and must have folded under something. Timing ended up completely random, nothing (!) was correct, but still it would "run" on two cylinders. I will try some way of testing valve leakage, but it looks nice. No marks on valves or pistons  :-?

Anyone had similar experience?

Omega General Help / Timing tolerance
« on: 21 May 2010, 21:19:04 »
Hi folks,
Just a quick question here as I can't find any information elsewhere.

What is the maximum error in timing before interference on a V6? In this case it's a Y26SE.
Say one camshaft had one tooth wrong, or all cams?

I have to take off my cover tomorrow and have a look to see if there's any wear on the belt and how the tension is. Might as well have a look at the timing when I'm in there.

I have some trouble finding the source for my misfire/wobbling sound when flooring it below 4000 rpm. Actually had a EML light today, but that was just the air temp sensor plug that fell off (missing the locking clip) :(

Omega General Help / Squeaking belt?
« on: 16 February 2010, 17:35:44 »
Hello again dear OOF members  :)

It's been a while since I had a chance to read around here, but I've finally had the time to do some hobbies and the engine swap from a X25XE to Y26SE.

The transplant went really well and it was an easy modification to fit everything. The Y26SE I got was in excellent condition, but I have one rather disturbing issue.
The cambelt was changed less than 2000km ago (less than 1250 miles) and it is documented. At first start I had a squeaking sound coming from behind the cambelt cover (confirmed by removing the acc belt). I removed the upper screws of the cover to inspect rotation of all tensioners while a friend manually turned the engine, but everything moves just fine and there's no cambelt wear and tear to be seen. I fired up the engine and let it idle for some time (less than ten minutes) and the sound faded away. Engine running very very smooth  :)

The next day and the engine was cold, I heard the sound again, but not that loud - also faded away after a while.

Any idea what this could be? When turning by hand it sounds like bending a brand new cambelt (the somewhat "crunchy" sound). The squeaking reminds me of rubber against rubber, but not likely a bearing with poor lubrication.
I don't know if the tensioners was changed with the cambelt, but most likely yes since it was done at a dealer (service tag confirming change).

I really should change everything anyway, but I'm hesitant to do that myself as I need all the tools and parts (plus the high possibility of failure). Getting the parts in Norway is really tricky and expensive, and the expertise to change it is a really really rare find.

Omega General Help / X25XE breakdown - heading for Y26SE
« on: 21 November 2009, 02:44:07 »
Hello there, dear Omega-people  :)
I'm new to this forum (well, I've been lurking for some time, but found out it was time to open my mouth a bit). You seem dedicated to this wonderful piece of machinery and a lot of expertise is found around these forums.

Anyway, I hope I can abuse some of that expertise now (please don't flame me, I'll help whenever I can  ;) )
I've been looking all around this forum (and others), but couldn't find useful info on these subjects.

The death of a V6
I bought my '95 Omega 2.5 with a blown engine. I had the engine replaced and of course I fitted a new cambelt. Since I didn't have the tools or experience with the V6 I had a professional mechanic with the right tools do it. What I noticed was that the old cambelt was worn a few millimeters on the outside and a lot of cambelt residue/dust was covering the inside of the cambelt housing. The mechanic said this was normal on the V6 and it didn't really matter. After some days of driving I saw that my new cambelt was tearing away exactly like the old one. I did NOT change the tensioners (on advice) since the old kit was replaced about 4000 miles earlier.
A couple of weeks back I noticed that my engine was hesitating a bit and didn't quite feel "normal". I was driving slow due to traffic so no reving above 2000 rpm as far as I can remember. At an intersection my car almost stopped, made a few hickups and sounded like it was running on 4-5 cylinders. I stopped outside a mate's place and listened to the engine for a while. There was some kind of faint "whirring" sound, but I couldn't determine what it was. I touched the throttle a bit, reving it to approx. 1800 rpm when I heard a loud "clunk clunk snap gurgle" with the unmistakeable sound of metal objects hitting each other. The engine now sounded like a three cylinder engine. I knew what happened.. Towing the car home, dismantling ancilliary devices and the cambelt cover and saw this:

Tensioner not engaged at all?

Worn belt..

Bits and pieces of cambelt everywhere.

Shredded.

I think it's safe to say that some valves are bent, this just can't be in time anymore - as far as I know. Not sure if it "jumped a tooth" or two, but cambelt with slack can't be good.

Raised from the dead
Anyway, I got me a new engine today - a 2001 Y26SE with only 74000 miles. Cambelt + kit changed (documented) about 1000 miles ago (poor Omega got rear ended). I did not get the flywheel, ECU or wiring loom for it, but I'm pretty sure I can get this working with my X25XE parts (in fact I have two broken).
Do any of you have hints or useful advices for me regarding this change?
Issues I can see straight away:
- No EGR-system on the Y26SE
- Coil pack must be fitted (although original coils are there)
- Flywheel (and new bolts) must be fitted (flywheel is the same right?)
- Some sensors must be moved over to fit my old wiring loom

I hope this wasn't too much  :o I know it's a wall of text, but I'm Norwegian and we tend to type a lot  ;D (and please excuse my English)

Newbie Welcome Area / Finally here
« on: 21 November 2009, 03:38:06 »
Hello everyone  :)

Since I finally registered, it might be a good idea to say hello to the great people in here! I won't write anything long and confusing here now, too tired to actually see my screen here  :-?

As you can see in my profile info, I'm from Norway. I live right outside Oslo and driving my Opel (!) to work every day.. Well, almost that is.

I've been into these magnificent German cars for a while now, close to ten years. To sum up what I've had (if anyone want to know):
- 1987 Omega 2.0 GL
- 1991 Omega 3000-24v
- 1986 Ascona 1.6L
- 1992 Astra 1.4
- 1990 Vectra 2000 16v 4x4
- 1995 Omega 2.5 V6 Estate

As you know, I'm sitting at the right side of the car (even if it's left  :P), so the model names are of course different from the English. Nevertheless, we enjoy the same rides (most of all the Omega's) and they all have their own personality. Right now I'm having a dispute with my 95 Omega V6 which needs a new engine..

Anyway, I said I was going to make this short, so let's go on:
I have several hobbies apart from the cars, like: electronics, darts, HAM-radio (PM me for a sked), music production, DJ'ing, scene- light and sound systems, photography and probably some more. And yes, I am a pretty social guy too in all of this  8-) My girlfriend (NOT my car) probably won't agree to that..
Oh, yeah, my job too. I work as a mobile phone technician (pretty much the opposite in tool size when you're used to fix cars).

There's probably a whole lot I've left out now, but I won't make your eyes sore - just yet  :P

If you have any questions, just drop me a line :)

Cheers
