General Discussion Area / Integrated remote control system
« on: 14 February 2009, 10:24:40 »
I am looking for an automatic remote control system.  I have the following setup:

Flat screen tv
Sky+
PS3
digital TV (BFBS - rubbish apart from the free sports channels)
and Multi region DVD

The sound on the TV is switched off, I route all sound through a 5.1 surround system using optical feeds for the Sky and PS3 and RCA for the dvd.  It is a bit of a pain switching between different inputs, first the TV then the sound and of course changing the settings for sound dynamics.

Does anyone know of a system that will allow me to press one button for TV, DVD, etc instead of all those different buttons?

ta in advance  :y

General Discussion Area / Typical! More snow just before the weekend!
« on: 13 February 2009, 10:28:34 »
WTF!  This morning it starts throwing down the snow yet again on a friday.  Last week's snow had just about melted away.  Every weekend when I want to get something done on the mig something gets in the way.  Out of the past 5 weekends snow/rain has affected 4 and losing the crows foot tool last weekend the other one.

I'm on the edge!  >:( >:( ::)

General Discussion Area / I passed my MMIMs course!
« on: 12 February 2009, 13:33:14 »
Over the past 3 days I have been on a course which qualifies me to work on major incidents (plane crashes, rail crashes, large fires, etc) It goes through how to set up the relevant controls and safety measures and how to deal with the medical side of one of these incidents.  MMIMs stands for Major Medical Incident Management.

The reason I am really chuffed is that my job doesn't allow me to do many courses and I am really interested in this field.  As well as passing I got reccomended for instructor.  So if I pass another instructor course I could teach this principle/method.

Now, when I move back to the UK in May (its just been changed, eek!) I am going to be volunteering for a local First Responder scheme because I dont get to do anything really medical in my job and I am fed up of spending my days behind a desk.

With this qual I should have my arm bitten off!  Cant wait!  :y

(by the way, dont get sick in Surrey from May onwards!  muwhahahaha.......)  ;D ;D ;D

lost BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4.  Still have all the other channels and the recording 2 channels at once thingy now works.

Did all the usual resets, updates, signal tests (got a v good signal) but just cant get those channels to work.  Popped the old one back on and I get them again....v strange!

Any experts out there know whats going on?  (Im in Europe.....shhhh)

General Discussion Area / Learning how to weld
« on: 31 January 2009, 19:07:31 »
I am thinking of getting a welding kit and learning how to so that I can build own trailer for the boat (much cheaper than buying one!)

I have my eyes on a lightweight inverter type (translation from German not sure if it is correct in english) as the chap sa that this would be the easiest to learn.  Is he right?  Anything I sld know?  I am quite handy and I learn quick so I dont see much of a drama.....

oh and its for mild steel

« on: 29 January 2009, 08:26:49 »

- start preping the body for rust treatment, filler and touch up paint work.
- top up ATF
- charge/replace battery
- replace oil/coolant oh bugger it may as well do all fluids

House
- replace LNB with one compatible with Sky+ (my dish is 18ft off the rather ground!) and wire in second tuner
- Start going through cellar and garage getting rid of rubbish
- finally get round to making that tool organiser for the garage

boy will I deserve a beer after all that!  :y

General Discussion Area / Coming Home (ish)
« on: 28 January 2009, 15:36:03 »
Well I was starting to feel a bit lonely out here in Germany.  There are plenty of Migs but noone who wants to take that extra step and join a forum about them.

So I have just been told I am off to Aldershot next some time around Jul/Aug/Sept.  The posting order says July but these things are always negociated between COs.  The job is a good one though and a techie one at that.  I left the IT world to join the Army so getting back into it will be nice and easy.   8-)

Now I am in a pickle about what to do about the Mig.  I have the XF and that is staying it is a phenominal car and a bargain too with all the Tax-free and discounts.  My Mig is undergoing some Oil cooler treatment but I think the wife will kill me if I dont get rid.  She wants something smaller for the airport runs (trolly Dolly :-*) but I am thinking about keeping it.

Hmmmm what to do.......  :-/

General Discussion Area / Belated Merry Xmas and hello from Hawaii
« on: 28 December 2008, 05:16:25 »
I know its late but belated Merry Xmas to you all!

I was on a cruise ship where the internet was slow and expensive so I could not get online on Christmas day.  The weather here is great as we are now staying with a friend who lives on a hill over looking Waikiki and Honolulu (a former judge, she married me and the wife in her house right in the spot where I am sitting writing this message)

The cruise took us around all the islands with a day in each location and we saw and experienced so much, including lava flows, swimming with wild dolphins, snorkelling in a bay which was like an aquarium, and a lu'au on Xmas day.  When I get the photos uploaded I will send you the links because there are some great shots.

Tomorrow I get to go fly-fishing on the flats going for the elusive bonefish or o'io.  I have caught a few before and pound for pound are the best fighting fish I have ever hooked.

I am now convinced that I am going to live here after the army career is over and me and the missus want to take advantage of the current housing situation.  I can pick up an acre on the big island for $50k!!!!

Well I hope I havent made you all too sick, I wish I could share the islands with you all.  You should all get out here at least once in your life, it is fantastic.

General Discussion Area / Next time you fly...........
« on: 09 December 2008, 18:01:59 »
My wife is enjoying a few months off work voluntarily thanks to the economic downturn.  Airlines such the one my wife works for have had to offer temporary sabaticals.  The idea being that those who want to find different work can do so while retaining the benefits of the airline for a while.

she was sent this article today which proves sobering reading:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9900E4DD1031F933A05757C0A961958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all

and just think, if you (the proverbial you, not intended at anyone) do have a go at a flight attendant when I'm on the flight you'll have me to deal with   8-)

General Discussion Area / One for Debs
« on: 18 November 2008, 22:53:04 »
No doubt a quick one for the Queen of knowledge but I cant find the answer anywhere....

On the boat hull I am using glycerophthalic paint onto which I was hoping to put a layer of Epoxy to increase the protection for the paint.  After which I was going to put several layers of varnish.

My question is, will the epoxy bond to the glycerophthalic paint and will it pool like water on an oily sirface?

very many thanks in advance  :y

General Discussion Area / Just had a great day
« on: 15 November 2008, 19:26:46 »
Woke up this morning and the missus and I decided to go to Bremmen for the day.  Hey it means I get to drive the Cat so of course!  ;D ;D

Stop off for a suprisingly nice German breakfast in town first.  Got to Bremmen, had a good look around, went to a rendition of classical music on a 1623 miniature organ.  Wife found a dress for the Christmas ball in just 30 mins, and it was a bargain!

Stopped off at Ikea for a few small bits and pieces and it was an excuse to have meatballs and chips for dinner. Now sat infront of telly watching tv with a glass of red in my hand designing my new worktable for the workshop.  Tomorrow working on boat again.

Days dont get any better :y

General Discussion Area / Poorly Gaffers
« on: 12 November 2008, 17:20:19 »
Just spent the last 3 days in hospital after feeling ill since wednesday last week.  Stabbing stomache pains, fever (which subsided) and constant pain when it isnt stabbing.

After several blood tests, ultrasound, and a good sleep where they put a camera down my gullet into my stomache they finally found the problem.  :(

Ulcers both in the oesophagus and stomache........and I'm only 31!  :o :o

Maybe I need to change jobs?  :-/
