General Discussion Area / Professional Mechanics H&S
« on: 13 November 2007, 17:26:09 »
Unfortunately the picture isn't very clear. It was taken just outside the local garage near my office. Apparently they were short of space inside, so this mechanic in blue overalls was changing the oil under a customer's car parked on the street outside. Nothing wrong with that... except that the car was raised on a single hydraulic jack with no axle stands and the guy was completely underneath it... scary. And these are supposed to be professional mechanics.

Happened at my local Tesco last week:

Woman drives dual-fuel car into petrol station.

Woman stops at the petrol pump and gets out of car.

Woman looks at the two filling caps, scratched her head and takes a gamble. On the wrong cap.

Woman pours 95RON into LPG tank and fills it to the brim.

Woman goes back into car.

Woman switched ignition on and cranks the engine.

Woman is taken to hospital after car explodes, petrol pump catches fire, and petrol station evacuated.

Letter to my Vx Dealer:

Dear Rebecca,

Thank you very much for your recent letter reminding me of the importance of the cambelt change for my 2001 Omega. As it were, your staff correctly pointed this out to me when the car had its 4th annual service back in 2005, and the cambelt was indeed changed at the time to my full satisfaction. While my car is not due for another cambelt renewal until 2009, I do appreciate that it is not always possible for you to check individual customers’ records when sending-out services notices.

I do have one question however. The heading on your letter states ‘Safety Announcement’ on bright red background, which I obviously found quite alarming. But having read through your letter where you describe the engine damage that can occur if the cambelt change is neglected, I can only see this a maintenance issue, albeit one with potentially very costly consequences. Can you please clarify what are the safety issues, if any, regarding the cambelt change?

Yours sincerely.

General Discussion Area / Diana
« on: 17 October 2007, 17:40:29 »
Was she or wasn't she...? killed by MI6, that is. Well here's what I think. Without going into whether it is beneath the Royal Family to scoop that low, or whether MI6 would have actually gone along with anything like this, I think we can agree that IF it was indeed a professional hit that it would have been carried-out by er... professional hit men.

Now I can't see a pro relying on a car accident as the murder weapon... firstly, the results of a car crash are pretty unpredictable. The proof is that the bodyguard, who was seating in the 'death seat', i.e. the seat where a passenger is most likely to die in a crash, survived. And the general opinion at the time was that had Diana and Dodi strapped-on their safety belts, they might have survived as well. So unless you put a bomb in a car or physically push it over a cliff, I can't how a professional MI6 assassin would leave so much to chance. Lethal injection with an umbrella yes, but car crash? I don't think so... (no doubt hotel21 is better informed than me regarding such matters).

Secondly, the method allegedly used is also one that leaves much to chance. Who can foresee with any degree of accuracy that nudging a 2-tonne Merc with a 800Kg Fiat Uno will produce a crash that will kill both rear occupants? It could have ended very differently.

Thirdly, we are told that the Merc was followed by a string of paparazzi on bikes and in cars. Again a pro would not take the chance of getting caught on film and would not do this in front of a crowd with long zoom cameras.

So as much as I am sympathetic with Mr. Fayed for the loss of his son, if we accept what he is suggesting we need to assume that this was a very sloppy and messy operation that succeeded by pure chance. And I rate the secret services in this country slightly higher than that...

Any thoughts on this?

General Discussion Area / VAT Registration - Arghhhhhh!
« on: 02 October 2007, 11:24:20 »
I set-up a small business with a colleague earlier this year and on 5th July we applied for VAT registration.

It hasn’t come through yet... apparently they currently have a backlog of 12 weeks, and today they are processing application from 25th June  >:(.

Needless to say that we were unable to do business so far because if we do then we will lose the VAT anything we buy...

'Friendly for business'? 'Improving the civil service'? Not round here mate...   :'(

General Discussion Area / Question to any postmen out there....
« on: 04 September 2007, 12:44:55 »
This is a picture my local post box, taken on last Saturday at 14:00.

The way I read this, there is a collection on Sunday 12:00 (the yellow box), and also it says at the bottom that on Bank Holidays there is a collection at 12:00.

However, if you look at the top next to where it says NEXT COLLECTION, is says MON (keep in mind that the picture was taken on the Saturday).

So my first question is: would the post from this box have been collected Sunday or not...?

My second question: if it was indeed collected on the Sunday, would it be normally delivered the following day i.e. on Monday, or would it be delivered on Tuesday?

Many thanks...

General Discussion Area / Oil Trouble
« on: 05 August 2007, 23:58:23 »
Well it all started last summer when all of a sudden I noticed that the oil level needed topping-up – regularly. By December’s 5k oil change I topped-up over 1L.

It was then that I spotted an oil leak from the rear of the driver’s-side cam cover. I obviously assumed this was the reason for the oil loss, so bought the bits and in April this year had the gasket changed. I checked the passenger-side cover as well, but as it seemed dry all around I did not change it.

However the oil loss did not stop… over the past 2.5k miles since April I already added 3/4L of oil.

The car was due for the summer 5k oil change, so today I had a good look all around and under the engine bay. There is absolutely no sign of a leak anywhere, both cam covers are dry, as well the underside and the sump.

The two sources of hidden oil leaks that I could think of are the oil cooler and the rear crank seal. The coolant does not seem to have any oil in it (I changed it today, so I know…), but I have no easy way of finding-out if the rear crank oil seal is leaking into the torque converter so this remains a theoretical possibility.

Then something else occurred to me – the car was always getting semi-synth 10W-40, until last year’s summer oil change which was done by Vx who decided to ‘surprise’ me with Mobil-S full-synth 5W-40, and at the December oil change I used Mobil-1 full-synth 0W-40. So this got me thinking – is the missing oil problem related to the use of full-synth?

Well it wouldn’t be that old problem of oil leaks developing when swapping from mineral or semi-synth to full-synth, because there is apparently no oil leak in the first place… but what if the 5W and 0W viscosities are too thin for the engine when cold, and it then consumes some oil until it warms up? But if this is the case then this should also be applicable to Vx full-synth oil which is 5W-30…

So I think this a bit farfetched, but to test this theory I used for today’s oil change Vx’s good old semi-synth 10W-40, and will report back in a couple of thousand miles to let you know what happened.

Incidentally, I agree with Mark DTM who made a comment that an engine that consumes some oil is a good thing, as it provides good lubrication for the piston rings. But the point is that I can’t afford to feed it with the very expensive Mobil-1 diet, so even if it continues to need topping-up then at least I will be using Vx low-cost oil… and I still don't understand how from not consuming any noticeable amount of oil it turned over-night to an oil drinker.

Also, on the issue of oil costs, I just came back from Italy where a litre of Mobil-1 0W-40 costs 11.00 Euro (around £7.50), as opposed to the £13.00 it costs at my local Esso garage…  >:(

General Discussion Area / Plumber trouble
« on: 30 August 2007, 01:59:15 »
We had a plumber doing our bathroom while we were away on holiday, he should have finished in one week but took over a month, wanted more money, and eventually walked out on the job (long story...). We had to take someone else to finish the job. One of the things the plumber wanted more money for was the fact that he had to employ a labourer to help sort out 'unforeseeable' wood rot problems. He told us that he used the advance money that we (foolishly) paid him to pay off his labourer, and that he was out of pocket as he had nothing for the work he himself did so far, so could not continue until we pay him more money.

This evening a man showed up on our doorstep, we were not at home so he got our mobile number from the girls and called me 10 times in total in just 15 minutes saying he worked in our house with the plumber and demanded to be paid. He went into long description of the hard work he did and kept banging on about 'you owe me money'. I tried to explain to him that (a) I don't know him and didn't ask him to do anything, (b) he should go to the plumber who employed him , not me, and ask for his pay, (c) at any rate the plumber told me that the labourer was paid.

The guy wouldn't have it and while not directly threatening, he said things like 'you don't know me' and 'I won't let this go'. I was upset at the fact that actually came to our house and told him that he is totally out of order that he came to the house and spoke to the girls (albeit over the intercom as the wouldn't open the door). He finally sent a text message saying he will wait 'until Friday' - not specifying what will happen on Friday.

I am considering going to the police tomorrow and file a complaint against him - problem is I only have his mobile number and no other details. I don't know the guy, don't know what he is capable of, and I am definitely not happy with the idea that he might call again at the house, especially when I am not there. I am not afraid of him personally, but am worried about the family as I can't be at home all the time. Even if he does not actually do anything he is harassing and intimidating by his presence and phone calls - my wife is shattered. I don't think I legally owe him anything, I believe he knows this but simply trying to intimidate us into paying because the plumber did not pay him (the plumber told us a pack of lies throughout, so not impossible that he said he paid his labourer but didn't). But realistically I think him and the plumber are in this together.

Any suggestions or comments regarding the above, the legal status of things, and to what extent can I expect sympathy from the police? will they look at this as a private commercial dispute and not get involved, or will they actually see the distress this is causing the family and take some action? I am London so it is the Mets.
