You have the 2006, you need a 2008 (or a rare 2007) with display or one of the Nav ones to get phone function

Nav one (NCDC2015), finding a working telematics is getting hard. I think I have a CCRT2008 upstairs, but don't think I have the CART display.

Before you try tracking down the necessary components, just be aware that you only have a very limited choice of networks available.
IIRC - O2 and Vodaphone
;)

Very true for the Telematics (GSM 900mhz only), but tbh, with the amount of Mins being thrown in with current packages these days, its easy enough to just divert your Mobile to a PAYG Sim in the Car whilst your in it, also saves having to fuss around changing the Sim every time you park up. ;)
Edit, 2008's are Dual Band though. :)

And this is why I bought a after market one to connect my two and the missus hers.

Ive taken the easy option and got mate to install the Nokia blue tooth car kit...apart from a small button and a Mic its petty much invisible.
Would have liked the head unit with built in phone but for the time being its ok.
