VERY slight leak
« on: 03 March 2007, 18:56:18 »

Hello, As title, I have a small leak of what looks like water, has no smell, and didnt burn my hands after any length of time, so I presume it is only water!

It appears to be coming from near the above arrowed region, somewhere under the battery area

This is the view from underneath the front bumper, where I think the liquid is dripping off from

This bit is what my dad said was the "front cross member" which means nothing to me, I dont know anything about engines, the dark patch in the circle is where the liquid is running off, south eastwards on foto, taken from infront of the car, you can just see the edge of radiator on the left of shot

This is the patch it left, from a couple of hours standing, which suggests to me it is very minor! Obviously i'm gonna get it checked out anyway but i'd appreciate any response if anyone knows whether it could be a serious thing thats leaking or maybe if its just a tiny hole in a not too costly bit of piping! I should add that I noticed this about a week ago but dismissed it as i'd just had the car washed, noticed it again today. I use it daily and have had no car trouble at all

Dunno, don't think there are any water pipes under the battery, it does look to be near the air con pipes though....don't panic I could be wrong.

If you were right, would this be a pricey repair job?

The only other thing I'm thinking is it could be a screen wash pipe, not sure where they feed.

Wait for some more replies from people more knowledgeable than myself, before doing anything.

Having thought about it, don't think it's air con.

If its antifreeze, it looks like rad. If screenwash, there are a few pipes behind depending on saloon/estate and headlamp washers. So on your GLS, one pipe to windscreen washer :p.  Seriously, it could be pump isn't fully seated - see cleaning the gauze post in Maintenence Guides...

Have you been running the climate system lately, as it could just be condensation, from the silver pipe next to your first arrow, which is not uncommon and absolutely normal.  Try and catch fresh,  or mop up some with white paper and see if it has any colour.  Screen wash is often blue and smells sweet, antifreeze could be red/blue or even green.  No colour, no smell - probably just water.

Sounds like condensation off the air con, nothing to worry about quite normal, will possibly disappear, just keep your eye on it.

If it get worse, repost.

well it continued to drip and the patch double, although it took over 10 hours to double (overnight), so that would suggest to me maybe not condensation running off it

But if it's clean water, i.e. no anti-freeze or sceenwash, it can't be anything else.

Presumably, there is screen wash in your screen wash bottle, not just water?  (and same for coolant)

I dont think its condensation....too much there on the ground

As TB suggests is there only water in the washer bottle or coolant? ( i would hope no one drives around with no antifreeze)

Im betting youve got a leak from the washer bottle pipework.

Ok I had the car looked at and they said they couldnt find any leaks whatsoever, it was probably just condensation but i have a noisy water pump! My cambelt was changed at 64530 miles (a previous owner) as recorded in the (stamped) service book but no actual reciepts for it came with the car. The car now has 79,000 miles on so I am considering a complete cambelt job including pulleys/tensioners/water pump. Would anyone agree that this is the best thing to do seeing as there was no proof of the tensioners and water pump being done at the time the cambelt was recorded as done?

The water pump is really noisy and the garage said there's no guarantee it could make it to 100k even if the belt's fine

if a 4 pot (looking at piccies I guess it is), the water pump is cambelt driven. If pump noisey, change it, and do belt/tensioners at same time...
