Buying a car remotely
« on: 10 October 2020, 19:33:46 »

Never really done this before, so dont really know how to go about it.
Seen a car I want to buy on Gumtree (depending on the answers to a few questions) which is in Warsash Hampshire. This too far to go and view / buy / pay, so if I buy it, the only thing I can think of is to have to collected via Shipley or similar.
Thing is I then presumably have to transfer money to the bank of someone Ive never met, before it gets collected.
Any advice on a way to do this which doesnt involve me risking losing my dosh please ?

Go down there on the train to see it and if it's good, buy it, drive it home.  :y

If it's no good, you've wasted the cost of the train ticket, but had a nice day out!  :)

Cant do that until this time next week due to work. If the seller is genuine, the car will be long gone by then.
Also not keen on rail travel in the current climate.
Any well known OOFers around Southampton ?  ;D
I suppose Paypal might be a safe payment option ?  :-\

Have someone look at it for you, or take the missus out for the day  :-\

Overnight in the New Forest as an aside...

I suppose Paypal might be a safe payment option ?  :-\
Paypal rules changed
Anything not posted by or sent by the seller is not covered
if you pay by palpal and collect ,or get your "agent" to collect ,you won't get your money back via paypal .
you will have to use small claims court or send the boys round  ;)

Good to know thanks.  :y
I have an offer to collect from a well known and trusted delivery driver on another forum. I may ask him if I can transfer the money to him and then he pays for the car when he collects it.
Still a gamble but less than with someone completely unknown.

I've a friend who bought his last four toys off Ebay like that: S800, Jensen Interceptor, Ferrari 412, CV8. Pete never saw any of the cars until they were delivered. But he's a lucky git, who has always made a profit on moneypits.....

In this instance Im not worried about buying the car unseen, dependent on the answers to a couple of questions Ive asked.
My concern is paying for it. I think if I buy it I will see if I get the delivery driver to pay when he collects, or maybe just drive down there myself to have a look at it and pay, when its being collected.

Personally I would drive down to do the deal on the day it's being collected, but then again I have had some relatively long disappointing trips to not collect cars.  ::)

If you have to do it remotely, I'd ask for a photo of the front page of the v5 and a photo of the drivers license of the guy selling it. Recently my NatWest and Halifax banking apps have both implemented a feature where they check the account holder's name against the AC number and sort code. If all three of those don't match up, I'd be asking questions / walking away.

So what is the going rate on a beetle these days anyway?  ;D

I have bought 4 vehicles in the past from eBay sight unseen , as they were obviously for sale from the person that had owned them they were forthright in answering my questions before the sale and I just knew that they would be a good purchase, but eBay has changed a lot now not so many good vehicles on there.

Fair point, but I wouldn't want to accuse  someone of buying a Porsche Boxster without supporting evidence.

I sold a car to a dealer once.  We did the deal over the phone and the chap he sent to collect had the cash.  :y
