High CO emissions at fast idle again on X20XEV
« on: 02 April 2021, 08:35:22 »

Well Car passed. But the CO emissions just scraped through on FAST IDLE TEST. Here is the printout.  Last year I replaced loads of things to get car through Emissions.  This year I have changed the Cat for a Type Aprroved one. Changed the O2 sensor, as after comunications with NGK, they said I had wrong one for my year, still Titania but not for the age group of my car. Plugs, oil, airfilter. But used the IAT, MAF and ECT, fitted last year.

I did a vacuum test and that is showing at 19Hg, which I understand means no vac leaks and engine in good condition and no ignition anomalies.

Will get some live data, hopefully today. But wandering why always the FAST IDLE TEST causes the problems. Would the EGR valve being faulty(no Error codes show for it), cause this problem?

MOT Centre is 3 miles from the house and the car was taken straight in for test.
Incase readings cann't be seen

Oil temperature reading Actual 86

FAST IDLE TEST
RPM :- 3084 PASS
CO :- 0.298 PASS
HC :- 70 PASS
LAMBDA :- 1.008 PASS

NATURAL IDLE TES

RPM :- 1043 PASS
CO :- 0.003 PASS

Here is the printout of test:-

This is the link, to last years post showing what I changed etc.

It also depends on the person doing the test (just retired tester) , did they hold revs steady, was it at idle for ages first, how hot is the cat , it all makes a difference . I have had cars fail and put them back on machine and pass with ease-----

I didn't take it, the wife took it. But the MOT bloke seems helpfull and does as much as he can, to get it through test.  The wife doesn't drive like miss daisy.  Watched too many Interceptor tv programs. LOL

Nice one on the pass. :y Just forget about emissions until this time next year. As we have just found out, an awful lot more important things can happen.  ;)

Congratulations on the MOT pass  :)

getting the cat hot before test would help next time ,
could well have had residue in the exhaust from sitting, being worked on etc
if the car doesn't get used much then next MOT run it down to 1/4 tank, put cataclean in, use up tank till light comes on, then fresh petrol 1/2 tank and give it a good thrash before a PRE BOOKED TIME SLOT ,so the car is warmed up, and the cat is hot .

the NT (MOT tester) only needs the oil temp to be warm or fans kick in to do an emissions test,
which is no guarantee that the cat is hot .

I hope your health has improved and you are on the mend now

Thank you everyone for the replies.

dave the builder I am feeling alot better thank you for asking, still have good and bad days, but the way I look at it, could of ended up not being able do anything.  Got a amazing helper with loads of patience, if I need his help on the Omegas (GastronomicKleptomaniac off here).

The reason was asking about emissions, was couldn't believe with work done last year. And new cat and stuff, this year it still scraped through.

Will get here to go a day earlier for test next year. And tell her to drive it like she stole it. ;D

Hope you all stay safe out in the big world.

What was the make and part number of the 'type approved' cat and downpipe that you fitted?
Looking at your old thread there was a suspect Circoli thermostat. Live data showed engine was running cool and that might trigger rich running. Did you ever replace this thermostat?

Hi Enceladus

This is the one I purchased to replace the other.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TYPE-APPROVED-CATALYTIC-CONVERTER-VX8020T/362453012246 Along with the correct NGK O2 sensor for the year of the car.

I replaced the circoli thermostat, with the one DG gave me the link to in the old post. Genuine Vauxhall Thermostat And Seal #95517664.

Replaced loads of sensors and other things.
Am going to try and get some live data, then compare it too last years data.

From what you are saying, the car wasn't fully warmed up when presented. A 3 mile journey won't get it fully up to temp without serious effort.

You mention the ECT sensor. Which one did you change? (My memories of the x20xev are vague at best!) I believe some had 2 sensors, one for ECU and the other for the gauge. Also there is something in the back of my head about these sensors being colour coded? I could have dreamt the last bit.

They have different plugs. But...

The ecu sensor (5v) has the same plug as the purge valve solenoid (12v).

Getting them muddled cooks the ecu sensor causing it to read - 40°c which leads to serious over enrichment.

you remember correctly ,but your system needs an update  :D
in the early days of genuine sensors on vauxhall (possibly other makes too)  there was a blue sensor OR a black sensor, depending on which engine etc
there's about 10 plus makes now and colour of the sensor plug can not be used to determine which sensor is fitted ,the sensor is effectively a thermister in a waterproof slug with appropriate 2 connectors.

the dash sensor/sender is a 1 connection sensor/sender ,the other connection being the negative grounding of the sensor body/slug

It was main ECU coolant sensor, that was changed last year. The original one on it was blue. Checked on here first and was told it was correct. So I am hoping it was just not warmed up enough. The misses has been out in it and said it runs lovely.

Once this snow and cold wind stop, am going to try and get some live data, to compare to last years.

Yes indeed, the best course of action would be to concentrate on recording and posting a new set of live data.

Parts have been changed, so who knows where things really stand as of now. EG the thermostat was replaced with a Circoli one and then replaced again with a genuine Vauxhall.

Conversely the IAT sensor apparently produced implausible temperatures, but was it ever replaced?

The IAT was replaced. Would of been cheaper to have got a V6 omega, the money spent on this one, but the misses loves it and bodywork in not bad condition for the age. 26 years old if going from first registered date, slightly older if I am led to believe, stood in a warehouse for a while.  Did prefacelift Omegas have Opel Adam, on the Vin plate, as that is what it says?
