.... on the continent! :o ::)
Two snippets of information that I've seen today on my travels around the net are that Dutch commercial fruit, vegetable and flower growers who use huge greenhouses are scaling back or even stopping operations due to the high cost of gas to heat their greenhouses, which is making their businesses unviable. Which of course may result in shortages. ::)
Secondly a German coal fired power station is shutting down because it can't get enough coal! (Which should please Greta (blah blah blah) Thunberg!). This is also happening in China where power cuts and rolling blackouts are already happening and the Chinese Govt. have ordered the power companies to buy as much coal as possible from where ever they can get it (Which will piss off Greta (How dare you!) Thunberg!), which is pushing up the price of coal.
I doubt that you'll see much about this on the BBC or other British MSM organisations TBH. ::)

Price of meat rocketing in the US.
Relatively old news. This is largely because they are exporting much of it, also Sippy Cups import fuel policy has significantly pushed up production costs.
I suspect that China is busy buying everything it can get its grubby mits on just to sustain itself but suppliers are too short sighted to appreciate the long term effects of short term greed/profiteering.

.......................and we are being encouraged to go out and buy an electric vehicle!! ::) ::) ::) ::)
If we all did that the lights would certainly go out and take years to come back on fully. 1973 type rotational power cuts anyone??!!
That is where we are heading, especially since the damage to the power cable from Europe down here near Ashford! :o :o :( :(
I reckon we should all fit windmills wind turbines to our homes :D :D ;)

I reckon the OOF Christmas similes should be holding candles this year to reflect the power shortages to come!! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)

I used to make my own fun during the power cuts, but I'm too old for that now ;D

Yes indeed, and in the retail trade we had to use candles to light up the tills!
But, in 2021 in the shops now NOTHING will keep them open as all the tills work on bar codes and computers everywhere, so 'manual' use of the cash registers we did in 1973 is a thing of the past; no power, no sales, end of!!! :o :o :o ::) ::) ;)

No power, no sales, no traffic lights, no ATM's so no cash, no lights, no telly, no heating, no life.

On a positive note a new cable has just been installed across the North Sea from Norway https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/norway-uk-hydropower-under-sea-cables-b1930521.html (https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/norway-uk-hydropower-under-sea-cables-b1930521.html)

We're an island, surrounded by strong tidal waters, yet we have to get hydro power from Norway. Why the hell can't we, as a nation, get our arses in gear and get to be self sufficient for ourselves. Or even sell any surplus to others.

That's a different sort of Hydro.
The Noggie leccy is mostly Hydro Electric (and Wind). Either water falls as rain/snow into high mountain areas, or you pump it up there using leccy when it's cheap. Then you use the water to drive turbines on the way back down again when you need the leccy at peak time. The UK does have some hydro electricity capacity, mainly in Scotland and North Wales, but it only makes up 2.2% of the UK's generating capacity(1.9GW). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroelectricity_in_the_United_Kingdom
Tidal is a reliable source, but so far it's worked out far too expensive and environmentally controversial for any government to approve it. You also need to build at least 2 sites at locations where the tides are (roughly) 6 hours apart because tidal doesn't generate much at slack tide.
One of the UK's problems at the moment is that about 25% of our Nuclear power is offline for various reasons. https://www.edfenergy.com/energy/power-station/daily-statuses. It's mostly due to be back online by the end of October (if nothing else goes wrong) which will add another 2GW of baseload, and reduce the amount of Gas we burn by a similar amount. Winter is also normally windy-er so there should be more offshore energy generated.
You can see all the various sources of UK leccy here : https://gridwatch.co.uk/
Personally I think we need to double our nuclear capacity to supply much more of the base load, and then just use gas to supply the extra if/when the wind isn't blowing. Trouble is it's taken 20 years to get Hinkley Point C built, and Sizewell C isn't exactly storming ahead either so it's not a short term solution.

Thanks, great info :y :y
Yes, for decades now, the possibility of building a tidal generator in the Severn / Bristol Channel has been researched and proposed, but it has still not happened, due, I believe, to environmental objections. The affect on marine life is apparently the main concern. ;)
-
I read an article a while back which suggested that the easiest & quickest way to provide more nuclear generating capacity would be by building several mini nuclear generators based on the reactors used in submarines.
I don't know enough about the (presumably secret military) technology to know if it would be practical but the story has a ring of truth to it. Take a proven design and build many of them rather than trying to build one big prototype French design with money borrowed from the Chinese.

All nuclear reactor power plants do is convert water to steam, (without burning anything), which drives turbines that turn generators. The steam gets cooled and condensed back into water. Nothing particularly military or secretive about it.
The issue is with what certain groups might want to do with the radio active material suddenly scattered all over the place.
Power stations are strategic targets, and having one in every town could cause issues.
That said, much of the US is nuclear powered, particularly those States whose topography lends itself to flooded valleys creating large, natural looking reservoirs for cooling water.
I think we're still some way off the Jetsons utopia where every house had a nuclear power station, but there is a logic to using small reactors to heat and power buildings.

We've just had an actual power cut ;D
Lasted all of ten seconds, just long enough to make me have to reset the clocks on the appliances. :(

Things are getting worse, I'm afraid. Wholesale gas prices jumped 20% in one day yesterday according to The Times, and Brent crude oil is $82 a barrel from $77 last week.
In the same article it was reckoned that the price cap would rise by ~30%, or £400 next April.
There are other forecasted situations away from energy that don't look good, either, but that's for another thread.

Your a beacon of cheer and optimism this AM Steve .....
It may enlighten the greens and greta's amongst us all of the true consequences when power generation is restricted to wind ,wave and wishfull thinking .
It's pretty difficult to be sanctimonious when yer' cold , hungry and cut off from twitter .

The sun is shining this morning, my doggie's ear infection looks like it has finally cleared up and I was humming a happy tune as I gloss painted in the bathroom earlier. No doom and gloom on my part, it's all a case of mind over matter. I don't mind and no one else matters. :)
Now....bacon butty for me dinner, I think :y

Everyone has forgotten now, but remember the fertiliser plants that shut down a couple of weeks ago that would have caused a shortage of CO2, that in turn would have caused chaos across several sectors, and it was all because of Brexit? ;) ::)
You won't see it on the BBC, but a fertiliser plant has shut down in Austria due to the cost of gas...... and Brexit obviously! ;D

Oddly, just had bacon and egg butties for brunch ;D

Sir Tig's tip of the day is go out and panic buy jeans as the price of cotton is at a 10 year high! :)

I ordered my repeat prescription a few days early. When it never arrived at the chemist, I phoned the doctors to ask why. She told me, as it not due yet, it would be sent to the pharmacy in two day and reminded me not to request it too early. I said "You know us old boys, we do like to stock up". She said "Yeah.....there might be another war". ;D
Sarky cow.

Statins, the curse of modern day living. I offered to pay but was told not to be silly. Apparently, I have earned, yes, earned my right to free prescriptions, winter fuel payments, my state pension and even a £10 Christmas bonus paid early in December. You young'uns never had to go what we went through in the 50's and 60's, it was horrendous. You lucky bastards have no idea. ;D

It's not just the coffin dodgers though. Apparantly over 90% of NHS prescriptions are "free". https://pharmaceutical-journal.com/article/news/prescription-charge-overhaul-would-raise-1bn-a-year-for-nhs-says-think-tank
The cheeky barstewards at the local hospital charged be £20 for pain killers when I was discharged from A&E last time (I tweaked my back a few years ago). I though I was getting the 'good stuff' they gave me in A&E - morphine, codine or similar. But no, when I got home I was livid to discover it was for paracetamol and ibruprofen which I'd already got loads of.

It would be enough to make my blood boil. Trouble is I can't afford the blood pressure medicines I would then need.
There is a lot of money to be made in tablets.....
Speaking of Ibruprofen.
Lidl.....200 MG 12 pack around 30p
Boots..200 MG 12 pack around 80p
Nurofen 200 MG 12 pack around £4.... :o :o :o :o
All with the same active ingredients.

....are you suggesting I have a ginger minge? :P

Well....it is the internet. Stranger things have happened, Anne. ;D

For all we know, you could be a 5'4" person of colour suffering from LBGT. ::)

I'm pretty sure that women (and those who identify as women) had a ginger minge long before the internet was a thing. :)
I personally prefer a fanny to be devoid of minge, regardless of colour.
As an old boy who remembers the war I imagine your experience of lady parts has been pretty hairy.

Part of me could be 5' 4".....but I try not to boast. 8) 8)
Actually that leaves about 9 inches which sounds about right. :)

Part parts? Can't say I've had that much experience of them ;D
If you mean pant parts, I have come across the odd female who's fanny did a passable impression of Max Wall.

Now this dates you. 8)
Do you fond memories of the music hall stars from when you were a nipper.

What was this thread originally about?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't about ginger pussy trimmed in the shape of Max Wall's hair. ;D ;D ;D

He is a doctor!
Yep.....and this doctor will tell you that people take a dump at different times. If we all had a shit at exactly the same time the sewers may get blocked. :)
I vary the times I have sex, too. :)
You should try it. ::)

My dentist is f*ucking gorgeous. :-* :-* :-*
Petite and softly spoken. She is blonde and aged about 30. She told me she comes from Poland, Lithuania, or similar.
Because she gets so close it is impossible not to notice how feminine she smells. :)
Oh....and she has great teeth.

Well the lights have gone out in Lebanon.... literally! :o And the entire country will be without power for about three days apparently! :(
Also it's being reported that India has about 3 days of coal left! :-\
The end of the world is nigh! ::)

That's the price you pay for selling it all to the Chinese...
A handful of people got exceptionally rich and everyone else pays.

ASDA fuel up 3p this morning, this from Reuters:
Brent crude was up $1.62 cents, or 2%, at $84.01 a barrel by 0914 GMT, The highest level since October 2018.
U.S. oil rose $1.95, or 2.5%, at $81.30 a barrel, the highest since late 2014.

The good news is that $80 a barrel is kinda the point where US oil fracking operations get profitable again, so hopefully those good ole boys will get fracking! As they are not in OPEC there's no obligation to limit production either. :y
Although that was what used to happen when Trumpy was in charge. Senile Joe might have other ideas. :-\

Less to do with politics and more to do with economics, I would imagine.

Hopefully you are right Uncle STEMO, but look what's happened here where clearly politics has trumped common sense where fracking has been banned and only the other day permission was refused for Shell to further explore and develop their Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea. ::)
Maybe that will change and permission will quietly be granted once Flop26 has come and gone. :-\

The US is still fracking enough oil to supply it's domestic market.
Edit, nearly enough

They won't bother Ole Sippy Cup with details like that :-X

Just passed one of the local petrol stations on the way home and noticed the price /litre is €1.67 ( £1.41 ) up from €1.52 last week . That's quite a jump even for this little country .
We don't have town gas down here therefore all heating and cooking is either LPG or kerosene So it'll be interesting to see what heartache is just over the horizon.
Burning turf was commonplace but cutting it has now been banned by the government although it can still be had . Smells lovely but gives out 'ck all heat . ::)
Me ? I bought thirty 40KG bags of dirty black Polish coal last week and have five tons of seasoned Oak, ash and birch stacked in my barn couple that with the 450 litres of kerosene that I had the presence of mind to brim my tank with last month means that not an ounce of f\/ck will be given through winter from this little " Neidin ".
COP 21 ..If they climb the Finnieston Crane and gaze SW they'll see my " f\/ck off" smoke signals , I'm not going cold for anyone ;D
-
Good for you Don! :y
I was in the middle of switching to Avro Energy when they went bust a couple of weeks ago, so I've no idea who is supplying my gas and leccy, nor how much it's costing! :D Hey ho! ::)

If only the yoghurt knitters would let us do some we might not be in such a parlous state today. ::)

The Govt. turned two two licences to extract more north sea Gas last week due to being terrified of the Greenies.
This whole problem has arisen due to abandonment of fossil fuel before having viable alternatives.
If old people freeze to death this winter, Green fascists and spineless Politicians will be to blame. Not that they will give a shit.

There is loads of coal under our feet, Get diggin Boris. Then ask the Chinkies for the plans for their coal fired power stations. :D

Heard a new phrase on the news tonight which could even out phrase " mental health issues" it was " global anxiety" thankfully I'm not suffering from either just taking each day as it comes even though the world around me seems to be going mad.
-
I wonder how many of the media luvvies suffer from it ::)
The chap on the news earlier was hysterical about the snafu over false negative TCV tests in Cornwall.
I thought at one point he was about to have a stroke ;D
The sound was off, but from the subtitles and his movements he was cleatly distressed. Of course, the previous interview was with Jo Whiney, so it's possible that she had triggered him. :-X
