Title: Diff Refurb/Removal
Post by: grifter on 22 April 2022, 05:05:19
Hi All

When I was out last night I was sure I could hear the diff a bit more than I usually do, I do have selective hearing so it may be that (!). It's not at the stage yet that you always heard the car coming before you seen it, like the carltons were famous for.

The diff pinion is leaking and I was thinking rather than try and do that myself, a job I've never done, and I don't have proper ramps (to give me the leverage length for purchase to remove the pinion nut), I was thinking wouldn't it be easier to just drop the diff out and send it to a machine shop to get new bearings and seals, is it easy enough to remove or is it a subframe out jobby?

Imagine with the continual low oil level that the bearings are probably worth replacing anyway.

Cheers

G

You're unlikely to get the preload correct when you rebuild it, so it makes sense to get it done by a dedicated place.

A starting point would be to actually put some fluid in it.

Removing the diff is easy, pop drive shafts, remove abs sensors, unbolt from hanging plate, it's out. Hour including tea

The pinion seal, there's a guide, that DTM bloke did, the two seals were drive shafts go is a simple old out new in,

Pinion seal I used to do on axle stands, not to hard but needs a deep socket.

I suspect its just low on oil so worth a top up, there was a bolt you could remove and drill out to create a drain, but its been a while and I can't recall which one it was..

The Diff weighs more that Vanessa Feltz so watch your self when dropping it out !!

Its not too hard to remove as long as the car is high and secure so you can get a good breaker bar on the bolts if needed... Depends how well they're in!

It's got a top up recently, had a fight getting the filler plug out had to grind down a allen key socket to fit. Yeah I'm not confident doing it myself, especially lying in my back underneath it, plus I've not got the torque to tighten it up again, think it was a high torque if I remember rightly.

Just drop it on my belly, be like a kid jumping on a trampoline!

I've punted my cars around local companies who do rebuilds but... I got the sharp intake of breath treatment, and was told that they didn't want a car clogging up their workshop space whilst waiting for non existent spares. So pardon me for breathing, and I'll  jog on and keep my hard earned in my Swiss bank account ::)

Yours are slippers, don't know if some bits still available,, would be worth a look in the Classic mags as there's lots of blokes in sheds that advertise in them.

There's a big engineering shop in Glasgow that do anything and everything, I'm sure they'd be able to do change a seal and bearings in a diff.

BG is right, two of my cars have limited slips, which may or may not complicate things a bit more. So looking further into the future and  Boris the bullshitters green plan for us all, then some extra sound deadening on the boot floor and under the rear seat area, and a pair of ear defenders......job's a good 'un and money saved ;)

Ive got my LSD in with q local firm. I don't think he's looked at it yet (the perils of being good is that he's busy all the time) but I woll report back with what he has been able to do  if anything.

Outside of the box...

Carlton rear subframe and a Monaro diff...

Ought to be a few more places overhauling diffs for the Pontiac GTO*

*aka Monaro ;)

I'm not sure but wouldn't the ratios be all off to match a 6-speed rather than a 5-speed?

Not necessarily as 4th is normally the 1:1 gear and sixth might be the same as an Omegas fifth if the Aussie has a closer spaced box.

The V8 only really needs second and fifth :D

Oh yes. An acquaintance has something LS1 powered and he drove it around for months with only 3rd and 6th... :D
