General Discussion Area / External storage - recommendations?
« on: 23 March 2019, 21:07:55 »
Looking for something to carry in hand luggage with a copy of my digital life on it.

At a guess 1TB should be enough.

All recommendations/personal experiences/disaster stories welcome....

General Car Chat / How much for scrap?
« on: 16 January 2019, 22:46:25 »
Has anyone weighed in an Omega for scrap recently?

My Elite runs sweetly and (almost) everything works as it should but it has done 212,00 miles and doesn't have an MOT.

Realistically I am too far from OOF central for anyone to pop over and strip it for parts and I don't have the time. :(

Cars for Sale & wanted / 2003 Red MV6 3.2 Estate - for sale
« on: 13 January 2019, 22:25:02 »
2003 3.2 MV6 Estate - MOT due 29th Nov 2019

This car puts a smile on my face every time I drive it but SWMBO refuses to drive it and I have bought a Galaxy :-( so it has to go.

I bought this car from JamesV6CDX who bought from MisterRog.

James replaced a coil pack to fix a misfire and replaced the front crank oil seal but didn't feel strong enough to change a rear wheel bearing which is why I got the chance to buy it. I drove it for a year and then fitted a new bearing to the nearside rear. There is still a slight leak from the front of the engine but I cannot see whether it is still the crank seal or from higher up :-\

Just before I took delivery the instruments failed so James fitted a spare instrument cluster. The old one shows 114857 miles. The first time I drove it the replacement showed 106454 miles so the displayed mileage is under by about 8500 miles.

The CCR2006 (radio/cassette/4 CD changer) has a loose front panel and doesn't auto tune. It occasionaly refuses to accept the CD cassette and needs to be reset by pulling it out briefly. MisterRog left a spare radio in the boot but I don't have a code for it.

The towing eye cover is missing from the front bumper.

Front and rear bumpers have the marks from 'nudge parking'

The passenger door has a matt finish to the paint - I was going to either replace the door or polish/respray it but never found time.

Being a 3.2 it brings up the 0420/0430 pre-cat efficiency codes on a fairly regular basis.

Price 700 - located on the Cornwall/Devon border

General Discussion Area / Broken Smartphone Screen

Has anyone on here got experience of replacing the glass on a Samsung Galaxy S5?

I imagine that it is one of those tasks that is fairly straightforward once you have done a couple.....

General Discussion Area / Internet Providers
« on: 13 August 2018, 23:31:34 »
Many years ago I signed up with Nildram for broadband, email and some space for a website.

After a few years Nildram got taken over by Tiscali. The new owners didn't manage to break my internet and I didn't want to lose my email address or the web space so I stuck with them.

After a few years Tiscali got taken over by TalkTalk. The new owners didn't manage to break my internet and I didn't want to lose my email address or the web space so I stuck with them.

Until last month that is when TalkTalk turned off my web space. >:(

Not sure which way to jump now. There were two things that had me hanging on to a ridiculously slow connection at an inflated price - an email address and a  web space address that I have been using for 15 years. Now the web address has gone it is just the email address that I am clinging on to. I will be switching to a new provider as soon as I can.

Thinking of going with Zen this time.

I don't really want to bother with registering my own domain  :-\ but I think I will have to if I want to be able to switch provider and have some control over my email and web space.

General Car Chat / waiting for AA recovery
« on: 15 April 2018, 20:50:15 »
Sat on hard shoulder of M25 just past the M23

First AA van has been out and agreed that it is probably the water pump on SWMBO'S Galaxy tdi

How long do you think it will be before the lorry comes to scoop us up?

How long to get back to Cornwall?

And will it make any difference that we have a 2 year old and a 3 year old asleep in the back?

General Car Chat / Ford Galaxy - cable window regulator
« on: 10 February 2018, 22:45:52 »
Poxy things. A while ago I fitted new cables and drive pulley to the mechanism in SWMBO's 2002 Ford Galaxy.

Yesterday it self-destructed again, leaving the drivers window fully open. I had to go out in the dark and pull the door card off so I could cut some pieces of wood to length to hold the glass up in the closed position.

Looking back through ebay correspondence it is almost 2 years to the day since I bought the last repair kit >:(

I was just about to book the thing in for an MOT but I have a nagging doubt that it might fail if the drivers window cannot be opened  :-\ Last time it happened it was a royal pain in the arse operating barriers on multi-storey car parks >:(

This time I will buy a kit including new runners etc assembled and ready to fit (not fit new cables to the old runners).

Does anyone have any experience of Shalahambra (Sharan/Galaxy/Alhambra) window regulators? can anyone recommend a particular make for the replacement?

Genuine appear to cost about 105, pattern 25-30. If they are all the same crap design as the VAG original then I don't see any point in buying anything but the cheapest......

Omega General Help / Fitting poly bushes to front wishbones
« on: 17 January 2018, 22:29:51 »
Last time I fitted poly bushes (to my Elite) I changed the rear bushes and balljoints as well so I removed the wishbones from the car first.

I think I have seen reports of front bush replacement being possible with the wishbone still attached to the car.  :-\

Is my memory playing tricks? and if it is possible is it actually a method that one would choose to repeat ?

General Discussion Area / Smartphone screen replacement
« on: 15 January 2018, 22:42:51 »
I finally managed to crack the glass screen on my Samsung Galaxy S5 when it fell out of my pocket and landed on a tiled floor :'(

Has anyone here got any experience of fitting a replacement glass? It still works fine so I imagine it just needs a new glass (and not the much more expensive screen and touch sensor)

The process appears to be similar to (in principle) to repairing an Omega headlamp (eg warm it up enough to soften the glue and allow the front to be prised off)

Plan B is to do nothing seeing as it still works.................

Omega General Help / Rear subframe bushes - where to buy?
« on: 13 January 2018, 22:44:14 »
The ProjectMV6 is in dire need of new doughnut bushes on the rear subframe.

Has anyone bought any recently? Any makes to avoid?

I think I bought Genuine VX last time I bought some for my Elite :-\
