Omega General Help / Bolting back on Coolant pipe
« on: 03 September 2020, 19:03:18 »
I guess someone has successfully bolted back on the coolant transfer pipe? 🥴

I got the new thermostat transfer pipe from Yankee land. Fitted into thermostat housing ok and bracket is more or less in right place to accept bolt.

I’ve dropped 3 bolts down the bottom of engine bay (not reappeared on garage floor). Just no room to get angle on it.

Seems to me the only way is to remove the hydraulic pipe that’s fouling the bolt hole. Obviously will loose all the fluid from the reservoir in doing so 🤔🤔

Any suggestions gratefully received

I just think they’ve included NCD on this which they shouldn’t as I’ll loose it on my daily driver 🤔

I needed to take the car to MOT today (which I know it will fail on) but at least I was covered for that round trip. I can always cancel it

I’ll see 😉

Thanks - I tried AA - £262 😊

Not sure of the ncd on the policy though - think they’ve used it against the MIG

It’s in for MOT tomorrow so once done that I can always cancel if it’s wrong

Omega General Help / Ridiculous insurance costs

Evening

Has anyone got a good insurance company/quote

Obviously my NCD is used elsewhere on my daily motor.

I’ve tried Lancaster insurance today as my Mk1 Golf GTi is with them.

The Omega (1999 MV6) is over 20 years old but they came back with about £1,100 premium.
They quote that its not a classic etc.

Any members got a good insurance deal & who with.

Omega General Help / Re: Changing head gasket - locking tools?
« on: 20 June 2020, 17:29:21 »
Managed to get head off today at last - few hours each weekend steady away. Had a problem last weekend in that my Torx socket head sheared on one of the head bolts so had to purchase another socket - thankfully didn’t round off the head of the bolt.

Clear breach of gasket at cylinder 1 so at least that’s the route of the problem.

Very good technical guide on the forum which I printed off and followed pretty much to letter.
One issue I did find was that undoing the exhaust. I put car on axle stands and removed O/S front wheel to get access under to get to the 2 15mm bolts. I did find that pretty impossible to be honest as I think the nuts would have rounded off. Instead I found undoing the exhaust bolts off the head in situ proved the simplest, once I’d removed the heat O/S heat shield.

I’ll check with a straight edge tomorrow to see how the head is as far as warping

Had enough now so sat in hot tub with Stella - the beer not a lady !  ;D

Watched the DVD a couple of times and feel happier now. Seems it’s certainly not doom & gloom and well done to the chap in DVD as he explains it “simples”

Regarding lease on a Toyota - godda be joking right ? 😄

Hopefully can get some time on it again this week end

So well into my strip down to get to the stricken O/S head gasket.

Couple of things / observations / problems that I’m sure someone has been there before me....

1. Bit worried No2 sprocket has turned one “flip” as I used my torx socket to see how loose the sprocket bolts might be (no cam belt on) without holding the 24mm spanner to the cam shaft  :-[😬. I “think” I’ve sorted it by turning it one flip the other way and the Red cam lock fits in between 1 & 2 now. Do these cam locks only fit in one position relative to sprockets 1 & 2 ?

2. Seemingly reasonable oil leak at front - perhaps front oil seal I’m thinking - easy to fix I assume whilst engine stripped down to get to head gasket  🤔

3. Taken water pump off - lots of crap in the block as it drained what was left  - can you flush it with a hose pipe up the water pump orifice?

4. Took me all my strength to turn the crank clockwise - had to use a length of scaffold pole for leverage. I took out the o/s head spark plugs to lower the compression which worked then. Seems fairly free now. Car has been sat neatly 2 years without turning over, waiting attention,  so worried it was seized - I think it must be freed off.

Hey ho - Onwards and upwards - many thanks in advance if anyone has comments on above

Enjoy it ? 🤔 - more like bricking it !😄

Well I will enjoy it - if ever starts again 😂

Could have took it somewhere to have it done but I’ve tinkered with cars most of my life so felt confident to have a go - guess it’s just a case of being methodical 😉 -

..... thinking of the £300+ labour charge I’m saving helps a bit 😊

Haha yes - the little straight 4 cylinder OHV with little or no ancillaries - very quick job those.

I think I’ve spent about 4 hours upto now and ready to undo rocker cover and undo exhaust down pipe and then undo cam shaft and head bolts.

So at least similar hours to refit

Yes good bit of advice - to ease it up gently  :y

Hoping it’s not warped but I’ll have to take what’s coming  :-\

Sad thing is I scrapped a 3.0MV6 with a 97k engine about 7 years ago  :-[ - basically failed mot on most things - 4 tyres, 2 exhausts, suspension, brakes, emissions and the 4 door bottoms had gone, oh well we live & learn !

Yes Defo head gasket - O/S bank number 1 cylinder gone  :-[

In no particular order: Water in expansion tank all gone, emulsion in oil, white smoke/steam from exhaust- and nail in coffin : Compression test shows the No1 cylinder about 40% of the other 5 cylinders.

Aware the head could be warped and that there’s no room for an effective skim as compression ratio and refit of fuel system/injection might not seat properly. I’ve got a good straightedge and feeler gauges so will ensure it is “true” before refit.

There’s an O/S head I can lay my hands on which apparently is straight if not.

Have thought of a full replacement engine if all else fails but not seen any reasonable milers about. Mines done 113k - I think the thermostat has gone as it ran quite hot prior to it failing.  :-\

If I’m changing head gasket and cam belt/tensioner set, water pump etc, do I need to get the locking tools; the red & green sprocket locks and the water pump lock?

See these on eBay for £40 but do I need them ?

Thanks

Omega General Help / Gasket sealant ?
« on: 12 April 2020, 09:26:22 »
I’m working on replacing the head/associated gaskets set on my 3.0 MV6

Is it advisable / not advisable to use any gasket sealant or just put them on dry?

I would intend to polish up the surfaces with wet/dry paper before refitting.

Thanks
