General Car Chat / Golf GTI - grinding noise
« on: 23 September 2011, 22:39:30 »
Bought a Golf GTI the other night at the auctions  ::)  and it's got a nasty grinding noise (N/S/F) when driven hard in 1st gear, it's fine if pulling away gently.

I've done a few figure of 8's in the car park in both directions and backwards, but no noises.  It only happens when driven hard.

Any ideas?  :-\

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Whoops!!!!!!!!!!
« on: 12 June 2010, 16:09:22 »
I've been trying to find the cause of my auxilery fans (2 at front) not working. So have been checking fuses and relays and generally poking about.......

I pulled out fuse 15 which has a long list of things which it protects, amongst which are the cooling fan, sunroof and the dashboard lights.  I think that I left the ignition on when I pulled it, because now I've no dashboard lights and the sunroof dosn't work!!  The car starts and then the battery light comes on...

I've disconnected the battery and will leave it for an hour or so, to see if it will magically reset itself...... I've a sense of doom.........

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Nasty Gremlins..
« on: 14 January 2011, 16:27:34 »
Hi All,

I havn't been using my car much over the last few weeks and have kept the battery disconnected as there's a power drain that flattens it.... So on the odd occasion I've reconnected to give it a run and all has been fine. Until now...........

I forgot to disconnect the other day and sure enough the battery went flat, so recharged it, but when I put it back and turned the key all I got was a clunk and then the dash and internal door lights started flickering, along with something knocking away in time.....

I'm wondering if the lack of action has caused some damp getting in somewhere or if its got a dodgy earth? I'm not good good with car electrics so any help would be appreciated! Thanks  :y

Hi All,

Most days now, my keyfob dosn't work when I go to the car in the morning (even though the red light flashes), and I have to open with the key setting the alarm off! >:(

However, when she's been running for abit or done a few miles the keyfob works fine.... ::)

I havn't got round to testing the battery yet, but could this be the first sign its on its way out? :-?

Cheers in advance  :y :y

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Electrical Gremlins
« on: 04 October 2008, 14:08:13 »
Hi,

I've a couple of niggling electrical problems which I'm hoping are interlinked and maybe you guys and girls can shed some light....

Firstly, my EML light comes on intermittantly.  The car starts fine and runs well.  I did the paperclip test and got the following codes:-

135 : Telltale (checklight) voltage low.
87   : AC cutoff relay voltage low.
52   : Telltale (checklight) voltage high.

I was advised earlier to check the AC relay, but to be honest I'm unsure how to do that so I gave it a tap in case it was stuck... but no difference.

Secondly, my interior lights have recently stopped working.  The courtesy lights work fine (ie when you open the door) but the others on the switchs don't.  I've checked the bulbs and fuses and all is fine.

Thirdly, and I think this is unrelated and I havn't checked yet.  My windscreen washers seem very slow to respond and the water jet is very low.  That's maybe a blockage in the pipe which I need to check, but I'm wondering if the pump isn't getting enough voltage?

Its all abit puzzling to me.. ::)

Hope you can help???

Cheers

Steve

Omega General Help / Coolant leak.....
« on: 11 September 2011, 18:48:51 »
I'm losing abit of coolant.  Not much, I top it up once a month. I'm pretty sure that it's leaking from the thermostat, because when I changed it last year I didn't have new seals so I used the old ones with abit of gunk..... I know... I know.....  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Here's the question tho..... Is it likely to be leaking onto anything and do damage??   :-/  or can it happily wait till the next strip down??  :-/  ::)

Omega General Help / Which battery?
« on: 20 July 2011, 16:19:16 »
Hi All,

My battery has finally given up the ghost so I need a new one....  :'(  :'( :'(

At the mo it's got a 75ah 720a Bosch, the closest my local motorfactor has is a 70ah 640a.  Will this be big enough for my 2.5 V6 ?

Ta in advance!! :y

Omega General Help / Missing again................
« on: 18 March 2011, 15:58:09 »
I've recently fitted a secondhand dispack and leads, new plugs, changed the offside camcover gasket as was leaking and cleaned the breather set up as she was 'missing'  :'(.  I also changed the oil and have done around 400 miles since and she's been running fine :y

I used about half a tube of silicon around the scuttle joint, windscreen rubber and also gave the outside of the dispack a good smear for good measure.....

I just been out this morning in the rain and did about 70 miles, just as I got home she started missing again... >:( >:( >:( Popped the bonnet and sure enoungh the sponge under the scuttle was wringing wet!  >:( >:( >:( >: Aaaaaaghh!!

I used ordinary Homebase clear silicon and thought that I'd worked it into all the joints well... Obviously not!! :( I'm just wondering if anyone has any good tips for sealing these damn things...  :-/

HI All,

I'm in the middle of a service and the oil filter canister cap is solid.  I've been trying to shift it for about an hour but with no joy and now the whole canister is turning......  :(

If I keep turning it does it un screw or is something giving way?  I have the pieces to do the spin on conversion, not that bothered if it breaks....

Any advice please!!

Omega General Help / Scuttle....
« on: 05 March 2011, 10:28:35 »
Hi All,

Are there different scuttles depending on the age of the car or is it a case of one scuttle fits all?  :-/

Many Thanks  :y

Omega General Help / Waterproofing my new(ish) dispack
« on: 24 February 2011, 23:33:59 »
So I took delivery of a second hand dispack and set of leads today and it all looks to be in pretty good nick for the price paid. So far so good!   :)

It seems to me that there's abit of a design fault with the dispack in so far that they are vunerable to water ingress.  So I'm wondering if its worth giving it a coat of paint or a smear of silicon to give it abit of extra protection  :-/

As well as sealing up my scuttle panel of course  :y
